In the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book, on page 37 we find a pretty good definition of insanity. After telling a story about an alcoholic who put some whisky in his milk at lunch, it diagnoses his behavior:
Whatever the precise definition of the word may be, we call this plain insanity. How can such a lack of proportion, of the ability to think straight, be called anything else?
Insanity is a lack of perspective, an inability to see reality in its proper dimensions, in the correct proportion. When I get the insane idea to pursue my addictions, I can't see straight. My heart sees the big things in life small, and the small things are big. The important things are irrelevant, and the irrelevant, useless goals in my life come to the forefront.
