The good news is that Quanta has filed the paperwork to begin the process of applying for a visa to move to the US. So, now it is just a matter of playing the waiting game. It takes something like five months. However, the bad news is that I am still unemployed. I have been claiming Jobseekers Allowance, but they decided to stick me on a four week mandatory work placement. Which would be fine except for a few things: it is unpaid, the place is already overstaffed, it is cramped and out of the way, it is not even in the same town where I live (I don't have a car), it's 9-4 every day yet I am expected to be working full-time. I went Friday and literally spend most of the time sat outside getting sunburnt, since, due to the place being overstaffed, there was nothing to do. Well, this morning, I got up at the usual time, and went to the bus stop. However, it turned out I had missed my bus, and it was pouring with rain. The prospect of four weeks of this was simply too much, and I had a panic attack. So, I went home and didn't turn up. I e-mailed the representative from the company that is contracted by the government to sort these things out. I will most likely phone them in the morning. I am most likely going to get sanctioned and have my benefits cut. I simply can't do this. If it was in the same town, was remotely connected to my area of specialisation (I have an MA in History), and I actually had stuff to do, I could do it. I just need a source of income until I move to the US, but the area I live (the Isle of Wight) is simply an economic wasteland. There are no jobs and no prospects. There is no hope and no future here. I do not know what to do. I have money saved up, but I will have to start spending it, when I need it to move to America.

I have set up a GoFundMe thing here: http://www.gofundme.com/mhb0dg

I'm already at £650/£1,000. If I got the last £350, then maybe I could last a few months without having to dip into my savings. I am trying to sell my guitar amp also, which I could probably get about £400-450 for, but I can't find anyone who will buy it. I could try a music shop, but they won't pay that much for it. I don't know what to do. If I were in the US right now, then at least Quanta and I would be together, and I'd be able to actually further a career that is at least somewhat related to my area of specialisation. Please, pray for Quanta and I. I don't like asking people for money, but if anyone could spare anything, then even the smallest donation would be appreciated. I just need enough to last me until my visa application goes through, and then have enough to fly there and ship my belongings over.

RG, am praying. Also, I donated at your gofundme campaign.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures --1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (borrowed with gratitude from 37818's sig)

I get paid on Friday. Give me a nudge on FB as a reminder and I will donate something to help you out.

Maybe you should just visit Mexico, then sneak across the border and become an illegal immigrant. Then Obama will pat you on the back, give you welfare and free schooling and a driver's license.

I can't understand why our country bends over backwards for illegal immigrants, yet makes it almost impossible for someone to legally immigrate to the USA. You would think that being married to an American would be enough, that's how my mom came over from Germany back in the 1960's

Just applied for a job at Game. They were advertising for seasonal/temporary employees, so I went in, filled in the application form and handed in my CV. If I had gone along to the 'mandatory work experience' thing, then I wouldn't even have found out about it, much less have been able to go in today. Anyway, it is precisely the kind of temporary job I need whilst I wait for the all the darned paper-work to go through.

Same thing in the UK. It is prohibitively difficult to emigrate here unless you happen to be from an EU member state or a country that is part of the European Economic Area (which makes the fact the EU is going down the toilet all the more gleeful, since a Brexit will most likely follow a Grexit, and the EU won't be able to function with the loss of an important member such as the UK.) Unfortunately, xenophobic bigots who hate foreigners are responsible for such backwards immigration laws... despite the fact such laws are totally ineffective against illegal immigration, and deter legal immigration... when immigration is a driving force of economic growth and prosperity. Which kind of made me chuckle when people praised Belgium for ending the "irresponsible" free movement people by withdrawing from the Schengen area. Because economic retardation and restriction of freedom is worthy of praise, apparently. Honestly, if these people were to be believed, there is only one civilised nation in the world, and the rest of the world is a single land mass called "abroad" made up of an infinite sea of migrant workers coming to DERK ER JERBS. Also, all the anti-immigration politicians in the US are the sons of, you guessed it, immigrants. Edited by a Moderator

You're the millionth person to recommend that course of action, actually. Funny how it's the first thing that pops into people's heads as the solution.

They make it difficult for people to immigrate via marriage because there has been a lot of visa fraud that way. All you have to do is trick a citizen into marrying you, and then leave them once you have your green card. I don't know what makes this the "wrong way" to immigrate illegally, and what makes walking across the border from Mexico the "right way" to do it illegally.
