Varberg's attempts to get bikes to pastors were mostly stymied by local corruption and bureaucratic restrictions on motorcycles—until a Christian customs worker explained a loophole. Varberg imported ten inexpensive, 90-175cc Japanese dirt bikes—ideal because they require less gas and maintenance.
After retiring, Varberg's passion for providing motorcycles led him to a liquidation center in Minnesota. The owners agreed to donate 60 bikes—a container-full.
He then reworked them and flew them to the Philippines and sold them for half cost to pastors there...
I know Dick Varberg. He just finished a 750 page book on his 40 years of church planting in the Philippines. It's titled, "From the Iowa Farm to the Philippine Field". Not the catchiest title, but it sounds interesting...
