Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

    Ὃ ἦν ἀπ᾿ ἀρχῆς, ὃ ἀκηκόαμεν, ὃ ἑωράκαμεν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν, ὃ ἐθεασάμεθα καὶ αἱ χεῖρες ἡμῶν ἐψηλάφησαν περὶ τοῦ λόγου τῆς ζωῆς ―

    Transliteration (Accordance):
    hO ēn ap’ archēs, ho akēkoamen, ho heōrakamen tois ophthalmois hēmōn, ho etheasametha kai hai cheires hēmōn epsēlaphēsan peri tou logou tēs zōēs ―

    Translation (RSV):
    That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life —

    Grammatical Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG, meanings in this context):
    ἀρχή : beginning.
    ἀκηκόαμεν : perfect of ἀκούω hear.
    ἑωράκαμεν : perfect of ὁράω see, the perfects denoting lasting effect ; testimony based on sight and hearing.
    ἐθεασάμεθα : aorist of θεάομαι contemplate, look upon.
    ἐψηλάφησαν : aorist of ψηλαφάω touch, feel.
    ἡ ζωή : in John that which is preeminently life, life par excellence ; περὶ τοῦ λόγου τῆς ζωῆς in apposition to the preceding accusatives, safeguards "the Word of life" (= divine life in the Person of Christ) from being misunderstood as referring to the gospel message.

      Grammatical Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG, meanings in this context):
      ἐφανερώθη : aorist passive of φανερόω make evident/visible.
      ἀπαγγέλλω : proclaim.
      ἥτις = ἥ which.
      πρὸς τὸν πατέρα : with accusative in Hellenistic Greek may = παρά with dative beside/with a person, though in John πρός often includes a dynamic sense of personal relationship.

        In this newly started thread, I inadvertently missed out the verse numbers in the first two posts, so I am repeating them with the verse citations added in.

                  Grammatical Analysis (Zerwick/BDAG, meanings in this context):
                  αὕτη : feminine of οὗτος (masc.), αὕτη (fem.), τοῦτο (neut.) this. In John οὗτος often looks forward to what follows ; the latter commonly introduce by ὅτι or ἵνα.
                  ἀγγελία : message.
                  ἀναγγέλλω : report ; declare.

                    εἴπωμεν : aorist subjunctive of λέγω say.
                    κοινωνία : fellowship.
                    σκότος : darkness.

                              ψεύστης : liar.
