I did have enough sense to check to see if my computer could link to the local wifi - what little there is. I didn't, however, think to try that in every room. :argh:

So, after literally over a year of hauling my laptop around, it turns out that it works fine in my bedroom.

And it's not just location - it can be the orientation of the laptop, too.

I'll remember that whenever I move - check all the rooms!

AND try various orientations. A laptop sitting on a desk facing East, for example, might not get good reception, but will work fine when facing North or South in the exact same spot.

That is wrong on so many levels... :sigh:

But I will remember it!

Yeah, it is. And when you turn it, make sure to wait a minute before checking the signal - sometimes it takes a while for the wifi radio to negotiate a speed.

Oh, and the wifi device itself -- I tend to put them up high, figuring there's less furniture and stuff to hamper the signal, and I have discovered that sometimes turning the wifi unit itself can give a better or worse signal. Try pointing it in a different direction, or have it standing up instead of laying down, etc.

This is why we don't have wifi at our home.

This sounds like the ancient practice of adjusting the TV rabbit ears antenna.

Very much, yes.

:shifty: Should I wrap my laptop in tin foil now?

:shifty: Should I wrap my laptop in tin foil now?

I thought you would have already done that by now.

Nah, I just made it a cute little tin foil hat. I didn't know it needed a full body wrap...
