I need some input here.
http://www.tektonics.org/scim/sciencemony.htm
I have this problem reported and wonder who else can see it. I'm told some of the photos are being double posted in Internet Explorer (though not in Netscape) and that code pops up on some of the entries, like this: <!--[if !vml]-->
The Benjamin Wiker photo was given as an example.
Give me some feedback on whether you see these problems, and if so, what browser (and version of it) you use.
Thanks.

I'm seeing it too, JP. I know I run Internet Explorer, and I think I have version 5.0. I don't remember how to check my version to be sure, though.

:thumb: Thanks, Darth.
Anyway, as it turns out, I seem to be running version 6.0.

Yeah IE 6.0 is doing it. I see several reasons why this might be happening. Office (I'm guessing this is the application you used to make this page) is putting in <!--if[...]--> tags to only show VML (http://www.w3.org/TR/NOTE-VML.html) (Vector Markup Language?) to browsers that can understand it. I have never used this technology, and am not sure why its needed (special characters can be rendered using escape codes -- &something; (http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/charset.html#h-5.3.1) -- my signature for example has them)
Well anyway my guess would be that only IE can see this stuff, so it should be ok. But for whatever reason the <!--if[...]--> tags are missing their closing tags. Here is an example:
<!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype
...
</v:shape><![endif]-->
I bolded the broken tag. It should be <!--[endif]-->. The other problem I see, is right after this tag there is a <!--[if !vml]--> which seems to have no end tag.
I don't really know how to fix your problem, I would suggest not using office to make web pages, but this may be very difficult and time consuming. Also putting all this information on one page is very difficult to read... A simple database would've been your friend, though its probably too late now.

The compiler (Mr. Miller) used that, I believe, yes.
I don't really know how to fix your problem,
Can I go through deleting those tags, or will that cause more problems?
Thanks.

You might try that, though it would take a really long time. If you are going to go this route I would really suggest using an editor with a find/replace function (Like notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm) for example). I guess you would look for any <![endif]--> and replace it with <!--[endif]-->. Still not sure if that would fix it though.
Another route might be to try a program called HTML Tidy (http://tidy.sourceforge.net/docs/Overview.html) which has a GUI here (http://perso.orange.fr/ablavier/TidyGUI/). It'll fix broken tags and remove Office junk.
I parsed it myself, and uploaded the file here: http://doxsey.net/new.htm. Its unfortunately not very pretty, but maybe with some tweaking of the settings it could look better?
I could also try auto-reformating the information into something more manageable ... maybe throw it in an SQLite database or something... Then I could generate some html so you could stretch it across multiple html files. (Like indexed by last name / year / ...) Guess it depends on how easy the information would be to parse. (If I could easily make as script which could figure out last names / etc.) Maybe this isn't even something you would want though (and maybe its harder than I think it will be ...?)

I do have one that does that. Thanks. I'll try it next week.

So I was bored over the weekend. This was the kinda thing I was talking about: http://doxsey.net/science/a.htm.
I extracted, as best I could, each individual entry (thanks to some python (http://python.org) magic), threw it in a database (http://www.sqlite.org), then generated a seperate file for a-z. I changed all the pi/integral/infinity images into markup tags (like π,∫,—,µ,∞)—see William Brouncker for an example—and generally cleaned up the page. (Like shrinking links so they didn't take up so much space) Its fairly generic markup, which means minor changes to the stylesheet (main.css) can alter the look of the files real easy like. (without the stylesheet it looks roughly like it did before)
There's probably still a few bugs in the files, and I hadn't finished the intro/end of the file. Also I should probably add a name-list to the top of the file, that can jump to anchor tags later on. Further fun could probably be had by attempting to extract the dates for each entry.

Hmm, so are you willing to redo the file that way? No rush if so. I do like the look of it, and I'm thinking Miller would too.

Yeah, I can probably finish it over the weekend. Just need to add the intro and the appendices, plus clean it up a little. I'm thinking most of the hard work is over. (Making regular expressions (http://www.regular-expressions.info/) which did what I wanted them too took a while) I'll try to leave the content as untouched as possible, and probably just leave a small note mentioning that this isn't the original form of the document (and I guess add a link to the original) as well as that it was computer parsed/formatted and so may have errors. But I'll try and give it a good look over before I finish.
I could package the whole thing up in a zip file if you'd like, probably the easiest way.

Hey JPH,
I use AOL v 9.0 for DSL/Broadband, PC running XP Home Edition version 2002 Service Pack 2. I also have Internet Explorer 6, but access everything via AOL.
Other than Wiker, the only other photo I can see at all is the James Herriot book. Both appear in double, the one furthest left being a bit higher up the page.
The following also doesn't look right...
Appendix 2: Links to websites featuring Christian scientists
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->
<!--[if !vml]-->http://www.tektonics.org/scim/image027.gif <!--[if !vml]-->http://www.tektonics.org/scim/image029.gif (http://www.google.com/intl/en/dirhelp.html#pagerank)
Jesuits and the Sciences: 1540-1995 (http://www.luc.edu/libraries/science/jesuits/index.html) - http://www.luc.edu/libraries/science/jesuits/index.html (http://www.luc.edu/libraries/science/jesuits/index.html)
Exhibit of scientific works written and published by the Jesuits.

Vatican Observatory (http://clavius.as.arizona.edu/vo/) - http://clavius.as.arizona.edu/vo/ (http://clavius.as.arizona.edu/vo/)
Ancient astronomical research institution with dependent research center based in Tucson, Arizona. Includes history, profiles of personnel, details of telescopes, and a streaming video on the relation of science and religion.
The [if ! vml] stuff appears on all the entries in Apx 2
Hope this helps, keep up the good work

That would be great. Miller had some questions but I think you just answered them all. Thank you.
Johnny....do we need to send Bill Gates some stinkweed, then?

Ok it took longer than I thought it would, but I've basically finished. The only part I haven't completely finished is Appendix 2 (turned out there was no easy way to parse the second half of that part) so I'll probably have to do it manually. But then again it doesn't look half bad the way it is right now.
I'll attach all the files. They are labeled a.htm - z.htm, plus app1.htm - app2.htm for the appendices, and index.htm for the index file (not sure on what your server is set for, but this is probably it). I didn't include the images since you already have them and they tripled the size of the archive. I can throw em in there if you want me to though.
Feel free to give me a list of corrections (or something like that) and I'll work on it.

That's a lot better. The original link was actually crashing my safari for some odd reason...

That should be OK. I'll look them all over, over the next few days and also pass them by Miller. Thank you very much.
