    I'm Not Grateful Enough

I've always kinda known this where Jesus is concerned. I mean, I can't truly fathom what He did so it's no surprise I don't feel grateful enough. But I realized tonight that the problem is more fundamental - my heart simply isn't big enough.

Small hearts are fickle things. They rejoice until the next thing comes along. That's what makes hearts untrustworthy - they have the attention span of a gnat.

I get what you're saying, but I disagree with the root cause. It's not that our hearts are too small, it's that we don't take the time to pay attention (I'm guilty of this, too). We are continually bombarded with sensory input from without and our own thoughts from within. Amidst all the cacophony, it's extraordinarily difficult to keep one's focus on God. The more time we can spend in silence, with our focus on God alone (in prayer or reading scripture), the better we'll be able to keep our focus on Him. For best effect, I'd recommend repeating the Jesus prayer (Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner) instead of racking your brain to come up with things to pray for (which IMO is an avenue for intrusive thoughts to enter our focus).
Enter the Church and wash away your sins. For here there is a hospital and not a court of law. Do not be ashamed to enter the Church; be ashamed when you sin, but not when you repent. – St. John Chrysostom

For me it is more that I recognize that I do not even comprehend all that I have to be grateful for. I am grateful, of course, for the love of Christ that gave me salvation, but there is so much more.
