Of course there have been several party systems since then (3?) but I found this fascinating:

I'm thinking their position on slavery wouldn't go over well now -probably didn't then. But they might have been right about buying Cuba. :cs:

Democracts in the south were the raciest party.. when I became a republican... when I was 18 they were the "liberals"

Oh yeah, like I said, there have been several party system shifts since then.

Yeah, most of the racists jumped the Democrat ship for the Republican party in the 50s.

Oh did they, now? Judging from the vote tallies for the 1964 Civil Rights Act... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Rights_Act_of_1964#Vote_statistics) I'd say those who voted a big, fat "no" were along two lines:
1. Democrats
2. Southerners
