I have some recent pieces I did in my Drawing 305 class:

"Androcles and the Lion" - Approx. 18x24 (slightly larger - I didn't trim this one) Oil Pastel on toned drawing paper. Lettering is done in white paint marker. Our class is doing the artwork for the theater department's production of "Androcles and the Lion". (Yes, I know that it's not proper Greek. It's English words in Greek letters. I was too lazy to look up the Greek translation. XD )

"It's Our Fault, and There's Nothing We Can Do About It" - 18x24 Oil Pastel on toned drawing paper. This assignment allowed us more freedom in subject matter, so I did a reflection on the climate crisis.

My Dad had agoraphobia most of his life. It paralyzed him socially. He was a brilliant electrical engineer.
He has scanned a few of my old cartoons for me recently. They are actually Xeroxes that he used; the originals are gone. The sample ones he has were done in my 'youth'--from the mid to late eighties.

Neither of those cartoons were sold to anybody. They were both done simply to promote "goings on" (social) for my single's group at my church at [that] time.

And may I ask why do you care ? I think that my drawings nevertheless here show a divergence/and an adding to--certainly enough to be acceptable, anyway.

Obviously you don't know copyright law. Of course, as long as one isn't caught either violating the law or pretending to be something they're not, then no harm done, Right? No, I guess not. You tell me what it is, here. And am I really pretending to be someone I'm not ?

Of course I used the classic W.C. Fields photo. My drawing is a play on words: W.C. = Debussy. Please read the gag line. It says "Debussy Fields." That would be the famous composer. I studied a photograph of his face and put it on the photo of W.C. playing cards. That is Debussy. Look him up. Another sort of generic fat guy, but with a beard and such.

So, W.C. Fields sounds alot like Debussy Fields. It wasn't my idea (the concept); it doesn't matter.

I admit that I used two of Larson's cartoons to base mine on. I was in a hurry to produce a hand-out flyer to my Church's singles group, to give them all the info. they would need to get to a Super Bowl party at a friend's house that year. The 3 guys are watching the Super Bowl. Can't you see how my drawing style departs from Gary Larson's ? I did add two other original guys who are located beside the one seated in the chair. See them ?!
Can't you appreciate the differences between Larson's god figure and mine ? How about the different way we rendered the cloud "base" God's throne would sit on (?) Look at them again.

Regardless, can you at least admit that I am equally skilled in drawing cartoon figures ? That God figure (mine) saying "Hymph !" was originally 2 inches tall. That's a small drawing of a body to pull off with any accuracy. I did that just for fun; I was at odds a bit with God back then. My single's friends liked it (didn't get that God was disgruntled with us all) and it ended up as corner decorations on a singles' newletter: Single Track, it was called.

Nobody training me to do any of this. Even just the use of shading film I had to figure out on my own.

Why are you hassling me ? What's this about ? I am shocked that you went to all this trouble: how many cartoons did you search through to find those ? Wow. How sad that you felt you needed to do that for others and yourself.

Now, what about the other cartoons I have posted ? The other nine ? You have focused in on three. I have satisfied your second (W.C. Fields) objection; I know. Will you still regard me a fraud, of sorts, after looking carefully at the other cartoons ? ...perhaps even violated copyright law in them too ?

***Is the cartoonist whose work I've included (his is in color) at the very bottom of the page in violation of taking someone else's style "away" ? He is widely syndicated--really quite well known present day.***

What few cartoons I've been able to "show"; they were essentially random choices from many many drawing done over five years. It weas my father who simply pulled a few 20 year old Xeroxes, to test a new graphics program he bought, and sent these [only] by e-mail to me from his home in LA. He never supported my interest in art, and he is not helping me share it here today with you--anybody seeing these samples. He thinks TWeb is harnful to my mental health, not to mention a total waste of time.

~edit to add: I see that my attachments did not load the way I thought they would. Perhaps the comparing of them is still easy enough to do. I cropped them. Let your eyes roam.

No, I guess not. You tell me what it is, here. And am I really pretending to be someone I'm not ?
I think we both know what's going on here, it isn't all that uncommon: presenting one's work with the hope (expectation?) it will be regarded as a wholly original. I remember it having been done a couple of times in high school, but that's usually where it ends. In adults it's generally more than frowned upon.

Of course I used the classic W.C. Fields photo. My drawing is a play on words: W.C. = Debussy. Please read the gag line. It says "Debussy Fields."
I guess I get it, but IMHO it's pretty lame. Yet, that's neither here nor there. I used the original Fields photo because it was obviously another one of your appropriations, and that it offered a good opportunity to illustrate my reply. No biggy.

Regardless, can you at least admit that I am equally skilled in drawing cartoon figures ?
Equal to whom, Gary Larson or Don Martin? No, I don't think you are. I think you definitely have an ability, above average for sure, but still lack the polish to qualify as commercial grade. And why would you care what I think, anyway? You don't need my recognition or praise. In my opinion you're a good amateur who is relying on the works and styles of others to get by. Not particularly uncommon, but hardly praiseworthy, and in fact, a bit shabby. Be your own artist and develop your own style is my advice..

Nobody training me to do any of this. Even just the use of shading film I had to figure out on my own. That's very nice.

Hey, copy whatever you want for whom ever you want, I really don't care. If you want to impose on the copyrights of others that's up to you. What does bother me is when someone presents work based on that of others without acknowledging the source or at least acknowledging it's unoriginality. It's not outright lying, but does smack of willful deception. Not that you were obligated to tell your friends for whom you made the drawings, but presenting them here as completely original works, which is the default presumption with any such posting, is being less than honest. Now maybe your standard of ethics allows for such play. Mine does not.

Perhaps you have, your debt to the artists of Mad Magazine is certainly apparent.

***Is the cartoonist whose work I've included (his is in color) at the very bottom of the page in violation of taking someone else's style "away" ?

Not that I'm aware of. John McPherson's style is quite unique---I've always thought it grotesque and amateurish: he gets by on his ideas not his execution. But even if he was, what does that have to do with what you do?

What few cartoons I've been able to "show"; they were essentially random choices from many many drawing done over five years. I never drew cartoons that were based on a Larson cartoon, like the two, of twelve, I have posted here if they were going to be sold. Of the ten remaining, which you (MN) haven't truly critiqued for originality, I sold six of them,

BTW, here is one of my favorite Larson cartoons--a classic. It combines theology and accordions; perfect ! I play a "Cajun" accordion. I admit I play songs that others composed. Most Cajun musicians (wisely) do; it's very hard to improve upon the solid rock of tradition. Each player interprets the same tune somewhat differently. They put their own stylistic touches into them.

Cool cartoons!

Speaking of cartoons, here is a drawing I toned in Manga Studio. It started out as a sketch of a face I did on one of those children's wax tablets; the kind covered with a plastic sheet that you can peel up to erase the drawing. I scanned it and then toned it with Manga Studio. The "roughness" is all from the wax tablet itself, but I density sliced it into layers to get the different colors.

I did this oil painting a few years ago. it's called "Of Heavenly Things." I was inspired by the thought that Jesus is the principle subject of the Bible and that the Gospel is its predominant message--all its pages being stained with His blood. So, I set the primary light source in the image as coming through the glass of wine and casting a red shadow across the open page. The Bible is open to John 3 and verses 12 through 18 from the KJV hand lettered on the page.

That's pretty good! The varying perspective on the curved paper is nice. The tonal range is also very good for oil; what make(s) of paint did you use?

I wish I could do more with oils, but I get impatient waiting for them to dry, and I tend to overwork them into mud,. I tried gouache for a while, and I like the working characteristics, but it's so fragile when dry.

The top one, 8 Ball in the Lunar Pocket – is a picture I took of the recent lunar eclipse, superimposed on a negative image of the moon on a cloudy night.

The middle one, Moonset and Sunset Right Before Impact – is an awesome sunset I caught from my driveway and the left orb is another picture of a moon on a cloudy night – I distorted both but especially the moon, to where it looks like some man-made conical-like thing.

The last one, Double Sunset with a Twist – is a negative image of a sunset – used a distortion/swirling filter in Photo Shop – then copied it as a cutout – and superimposed both on a background of a distorted image of the surface of pool water. It sort of hits me as the Woody Woodpecker Twins.

I like drawing pictures of long, or oriental dragons. Here is a sketch I'm doing that will form the basis of a colored pencil drawing. The facial expression is reminiscent of the one a chow chow dog we used to have got on her face when she was being mishievious. I'm just starting work on the scales.

(About 4x6 inches, some colored pencil, but mostly graphite, over a light scanned and printed image of an earlier rough sketch.)

Here's a drawing I'm working on that will become first a colored pencil rendering, and then (assuming that works out) a gouache or oil painting.

It's titled "Rabbit Fights Dragon for Possesion of the Moon," and is done in mechanical pencil on paper, about 5x5 inches

There is no referent or backstory to the scene, I just started drawing and it led to this image.

It reminds me more of a monochrome detail from Paul Gauguin. He could always pack a lot of energy into a limited range of color. And the shapes look tropical. (That's a complement too, BTW!)

Below is a drawing I did last night (graphite on paper, ~3x4").

I was helping my niece work on a paper about Poe's The Raven, and I liked the line: "Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door ". So I drew a bust of Pallas as it might look lit from below. I messed up the helmet a bit, I should have looked at a model.

Nice pictures!

If you look at classic photography, you realize that in the final picture, composition and story are 9/10s of photography and all the other technical stuff is worth about a tenth.

Unfortunately, in the old days, it could take years to master that technical one-tenth. Fortunately, modern point-and-click cameras do a pretty good job on that technical tenth.

They don't, however, contribute anything to the other 9/10s; composition and story require a human. But you seem to be well on the way to mastering composition and story -- in other words, you're getting the really difficult stuff right.

My advice would be to continue practicing composition in the viewfinder, rather than cropping, etc., in the post-processing. It develops an eye for things. So much that I've heard of painters who carry an old film cameras no film, just to test composition.

Again, good work.

Which is why you're insane. When will you accept God, Doltzmann Brain?

I a NOT a "New Atheist" by the way.

Do you even know what it means, stupid?

I freed my mind from my childhood brainwashing long ago.

Then why are you a New Atheist?

"Go thou and do likewise".

When did I say there was no God?

For all you know I believe in Ahura-Mazda, or Brahman. Either is better than Yahweh, who I do disbelieve in.

Yahweh is merely a CONCEPT for the Supreme Being, it's not God, and as a concept it's a bad one. Better to believe in no god at all than a bad god-concept.

Could we maybe keep this thread on topic? I say this not in the interest of limiting theological discourse, but because there's plenty of such discourse all over this BBS. This is one of the only threads for showing and talking about personal art from the standpoint of technique and aesthetic appreciation.

If, Member 30929, you have any personal artwork that reflects your viewpoint (new atheist, old atheist, whatever) and meets the standards of propriety for this BBS (I don't set those, by the way), I'm sure we'd all be happy to discuss it as a work of art.

Again, I'm not saying "don't bring atheistic ideas here." I'm saying if you bring them, bring them as art. And likewise to Christians analyzing that art.

Here's MY art. Hope you like it!What; this burning Bible that is your avatar ?

...or, a small MS Paint enhancement of the classic polar bear caught in a blizzard ? I don't see it. (Oh, rats; I didn't notice that this went on another post, to the top of page 13.)

Who cares? This thread is for posting art.

I like those three main wild creatures, L to R, and the happy green flying one too ! The little guy in the middle is stealing the show (trying to), but lacks competitive size. One looks exactly like a horned yellow cyclops quad'o'pus with a mustache.

Yes, I know what you all might be saying; No!, but see for yourselves. I am not imagining it.

Hmmmm. Based on the overall look, I have a couple of ideas; I'm not sure they would support five copies, though. Let me think a bit.

Cool! That must have taken some work.

I was going to guess something related to either monoprinting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monoprinting) or dry transfer rubbing.

I've always wanted to try woodblock printing.

Yeah, it did take forever XD;; It almost killed my hand, too

And yeah, I'm actually about to do monoprinting in my printmaking class soon, too. :D

And yeah, I've wanted to try woodblock printing, too. That last one I just posted is similar in technique, but it's carved out of linoleum.

Here's another photo manipulation. Know what this reminds me of?

"And I heard the altar saying, “Yes, O Lord God, the Almighty, true and righteous are Your judgments.” The fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun, and it was given to it to scorch men with fire. Men were scorched with fierce heat; and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they did not repent so as to give Him glory." Revelation 16: 7-9

I have a DeviantArt account now to upload all my stuff too here - http://jrrtolkien2.deviantart.com/ And wow, it's already paid off.

Within SECONDS of uploading pictures, I already have people voting, commenting, and favoriting. In fact, the Mother Nature manip has already been voted one of the best fantasy manipulations for the day. I was speechless.

Also, I have a new picture to show. You can either view the DA page here (http://jrrtolkien2.deviantart.com/art/Uinen-Lady-of-the-Seas-144064280) (and please comment and favorite if you have an account) or you can see it below:
