  • Cat vs. Radiator

I finally figured out that Smokey's weird scabs marks on his head are from too close encounters with the electric radiator while he sleeps by it.. I never had this problem with other cats .. apparently Smokey does not understand it's not a smart thing to do.

Would it be unsafe to put a towel or something around the bottom to bar his access?

I would "fence it off" with a chair, but if you cover the radiator, make sure you do it with something flame retardant, then lay the towel by it.

I wouldn't cover the radiator, just wrap the bottom. Thought of a towel, but obviously that's a flammable material. Fencing the area around the heater makes better sense....hm. Chair won't stop him from having contact with the heater...would it? It's in the bedroom so no chairs around...

His previous owners must have known.

maybe you could get a rectangular ceramic pottery (like for small plants) to place in front.

Nah...this is a roll around heater so I need an all around barrier. Pet fences for cats don't fill this need or too expensive. My Google even suggested a baby fence. Yeah. Google don't know cats.

Maybe a pottery saucer shaped thing they put under potted trees. Maybe one with wheels?

Ya know, I do have a crawler out in the garage... I'll bring it in tomorrow and see if that works.

Yeah. .no. The crawler is too long...he could just curl up on it behind the radiator.

I've not found any that would help; in the meantime it seems Smokey has figured it out. Maybe it was my constant picking at the scab on his head.

                          My cat's arrangements:

She gets as close to the heater as possible - I've even moved her cushion a few inches forward to avoid accidents.

That looks like a totally pet safe heater though?
