They aren't sure what the problem is but there have been some reports of kidney failure and at least ten pets have died.

My dog's been kinda vomiting lately and I thought when I saw this recall that it could be the culprit but apparently it's for the cans and pouches. He eats Nutro Max dry food. :nsm:

You might want to have him looked at anyway if it continues, Rubia. Just like people, it's not good for dogs to vomit too often. And I'm no expert on how foodborne illnesses can start/spread, but I've also never talked to anyone who knew that you could get salmonella from peanutbutter until that huge peanutbutter recall. So when I hear that one type of food from a manufacturer is contaminated, I just don't take chances until they pinpoint the problem and are sure it's not in the rest of that manufacturer's product. :uneasy: But that's probably just me being paranoid.

Hi Rubia,
Sorry to tell ya, but I have heard dry foods are affected, also. Something to do with contaminated wheat glutin distributed by Menu Foods, I think it was.
I would take your doggie to the vet, just to be sure it is not his food, for many labels and types of food were affected by this.

Am obliged to reply to my own post . . .today I hear it is only "wet" foods affected.
???
Thanks gabbailey for the listings. Very helpful. But are any of these dry foods?
If not, I sincerely apologize if I passed along faulty info. Unfortunately, at times like these, rumors run wild, and I may have contributed undue alarm.
Sorry,

Well, the lawsuits have begun. I don't think it's deserved - the company recalled as soon as it was confirmed that their product was involved. They still haven't found the actual culprit.
As far as I can tell it's the 'gravy' foods only - makes sense if wheat gluten is the problem since it's used as the thickening agent.
I think I'm switching to Nine Lives for the duration anyway. I'm just glad it's the only canned food I use.

I must be buying the wrong labels. My cats are still alive and healthy.

I hear this a.m. rat poison might be the cause.

I've been checking the labels on the canned food I have here--my opossums eat cat food, as well as hedgehog food, ferret food, and a whole bunch of other things. I found 3 cans of Special Kitty that were recalled, but fortunately they were something that I had bought on sale to see if they liked it and never got around to feeding it to them.
Did you ever feel like "Whew, I lucked out?"

:stunned: Wow.
We feed our dogs dry kibble only, and the brand they eat isn't on the list anyway.

PETA is probably behind it.

Now they think it's melanine and not rat poison. Whatever it is, I'll bet China won't be getting any more orders from Menu Foods or other manufacturers for a while.
The recall was not expanded despite what the media keeps saying. Only 'wet' foods are affected.

Purina has recalled some Mighty Dog and Alpo canned products. I fed my dog three of the Alpo - gotta call 'em now for a rebate and head to the vet Monday.
