I have a collection of cute and funny animal pictures, and I am sure others of you do too, so why not use this forum as a place to share some of them?
I will start by posting these, entitled "Baby's Bodyguard":

And, BTW, since I started the thread, I forbid any and all pictures of cats being flipped or posted pics of severed animal body-parts, including those covered up with gravy.
None of that kinda stuff is cute OR funny.

My fur collar.....
That is a possum!
It looks clean . . .is it housebroken? Is it tame, sweet, and gentle?
My only knowledge of possums, are seeing them exhibited as road kill.
(And the Tweb testimony of a "Thirsty Possum" . . .)
Very interesting to see one as a handable pet.

Nang, that is a wild possum. She spent the winter at my house recovering from being mauled by a dog. She was released back into the wild at the begining of March.
Possums are gentle animals, good tempered, instinctively litter trained, and scrupulously clean. (except for Thirsty) Miss P, the possum in the picture, came to me unable to use her hind feet from a sprained back, one front leg swollen double it's normal size, covered with dog bites (and fleas) and with a broken tail. The picture was taken a few days before her release. She should have a pouch full of babies by now, as possums only carry their young for 13.5 days--they don't even develop a placenta.
I've had several possums at my house for R&R over the years, and all have been nice animals. (except Thirsty) Currently I have a couple of little Brazilian possums that I'm keeping for pets. Of the many animals I've boarded over the years, possums have been one of the favorites. It's going to be kinda neat to have some that are here for keeps. (other than Thirsty)

I just can't get over these possums! They are so dear and pretty . . .
They were always just big rodents to my mind, before hearing about your adoptions and seeing these pictures.
They do no damage in the house like a racoon would, then? Like if I lured one into the house with cat food, or something?

Possums are kinda like ferrets--they will get into anything and everything. You have to "possum proof" your house wherever you allow them access.
I wouldn't lure one in because they are a lot of work. I bring them in if they are injured and patch them up and send them on their way. They're an endearing creature, but a creature suited to roam extensively. The Virginia Opossum's normal home range is several hundred acres, up to a square mile.
If you have one they require a pain-in-the-butt diet to prepare. Fresh green stuff, mice (yup, Miss P was a mouse muncher and chowed down 3 or so a week) fruits, sweet potatoes, eggs, raw sweet corn, etc. You also have to make sure that you maintain the right calcium-phosporous ratios or they will develop metabolic bone disease. Managing the diet is a lot of work. You also have to provide them with bones on an ongoing basis--they actually eat the bones as a calcium source.
Virgiania possums are delightful animals but if you don't know how to approach a wild animal they can bite. I have many years of handling both wild and exotic animals, from foxes and raccoons to Nile monitors and alligators, and venomous reptiles as well. I can pick up a wild possum without being bitten. But it's taken me years of experience to learn their body language and to distinguish between a display and the real deal. Even knowing the body language, Miss P and other possums scratched me up on occassion--not from aggression but from hanging on because a possum's greatest fear is falling. They climb a great deal in the wild and don't always realize that you won't let them drop when you're holding them.
If you ever want a possum for a pet I suggest a short tailed opossum. These are the little guys from South America who are just making their way onto the pet scene. They are hamster size, easily kept in a cage, and don't rearrainge your house by "exploring," which is a possum's second favorite hobby, after eating. They are scrupiously clean, like the Virginia opossums, and behave similarly. This is what the little possums are like if you're ever in the market for one.

I'm amazed. Hubby and I were just researching possums over the weekend because a mated pair seem to have made our back yard home for the moment. They walk along the top of our wood fence when we're grilling out after dark and just stand and stare at us, unafraid. I've gotten very close to try and photograph them and they're even unspooked by the bright flash. Hubby keeps warning me back..."They're wild animals! You don't know what they'll do!"
When we noticed droppings in the middle of our back yard (same place every night) and digging along the bottom of the fence line for - like - 50 feet, we were tempted to consider them "pests." So, we read up a little and found out that they can be "vicious when threatened," and that you should use extreme caution when approaching them if they get into your home. Okaaaaay. We also found out that they will eat absolutely anything, which accounts for them having been around since they hung with the dinosaurs. Okaaaaay. The good news was that we found out they don't stick around one location for long. I guess that was good news. Being a fan of ferrets and raccoons most of my life, I think the little buggers are cute and would have loved to see a new litter clinging to mamma's back one evening! Hubby would have preferred to get the shotgun, which is his normal reaction to squirrels. We're very different, he and I, in this regard.

The first is my sister with her 2 bearded dragons. The rest are my cats Brian (the redhead) and Sarah (the privileged character). Sarah came home from the shelter a tiny kitten...just weaned...and immediately imprinted on our yellow Lab, Lady. You can see how she was never far from her, imitating her positions...needing to sleep touching her whenever possible. Lady's gone now, so Sarah spends most of her time staring at the bird cage now...wishing the door to open.

Brian is costing me a fortune. He's got his second consecutive bacterial infection from his medication keeping his stool soft. So, that's 2 medications and a prescription diet after his exploratory surgery. Let's not even mention the bright orange stains on my beige carpet this morning when he decided he didn't like the antibiotic and vomited the pumpkin pie filling that contains his other med.
Yeah, he rulz. Want him?

I think this one, "Always wash your food before you eat it" could also be used during a "discussion" with the Gerbz.
