I was just thinking about something, but my memory on how it all works out is all fuzzy.
If Dick Cheney were to pass on, wouldn't that mean Nancy Pelosi would become the VP?

No. If the Vice President dies, the President nominates a successor who has to be confirmed by a majority in both houses of congress.

Ditto. Though if both Bush and Cheney died at once, Pelosi would be the President.

It would not be the first time either. When Agnew resigned, Nixon chose his replacement, Gerald Ford.

...And when Nixon resigned and Ford replaced him, Ford then nominated Nelson Rockefeller to fill in the vacancy in the Vice Presidency.

*keeps fingers crossed*

If Pelosi really orchestrated an armed coup, she'd be a fool to replace being senate majority leader for being the president; she'd find it much better to remain both senate majority leader AND president (and chief justice as well, for that matter). We wouldn't want the seperation of powers to get in the way......

And since Ford never sought reelection, he is the only man in our history to serve as an unelected President. (since he wasn't elected to the Vice Presidency w/ Nixon)

Legal scholars have named a number of different problems with the Presidential succession, one of them is the lack of separation of powers. Partly, if the Speaker of the House resigns to maintain the separation, does this remove them from the Presidency? It presents a constitutional quandary. Go read Wikipedia, it's fascinating.
