Okay. I'll admit that this is cool. And that I'd like to see more TWebbers join in.

Just set mine up, and it's here (http://www.librarything.com/catalog/jbfideidefensor). I actually seem to be the only person on there who possesses a few of my books. I'm stunned, though, that a few of the more obscure ones are indeed shared.

So, Tizzi, where's yours?

I don't use libraries. I should, but I immensely prefer to actually own the books I read. Hence, I shall undoubtedly pour a great deal of money into amassing a larger collection, but someday, I'll be able to look at a shelf full of amazing books, owned by me, and just bask in their information content. :tongue:

Wow, you have an impressive collection.

Thank you. :blush:

:yes: One of my all-time favorites. I have my copy sitting in my hands this very moment. (Well, technically, in one hand as I type with the other.) It seems to have sustained some water damage in an accident. I believe a family member had something to do with that... Ah well, I can still read it, at least.

Now you just need to arrange to increase the count of books held in common by getting Dark Night of the Soul. :wink:

Sheer awesomeness. :teeth: You have the first volume of the Philokalia? How is it? I'm hoping to get all four volumes someday (I found them together on Amazon for around $250, and I'm sure that at some point this summer, I could perhaps actually afford that).

Okay, I'm convinced. Once I can get my home computer set-up re-set-up, and get an online connection again, I'll be there. Probably a week or two from now.

It'll be easier to use now than it would have been for me in the past, since I'm having to rebuild my library from scratch. If I still had the old library, I don't know that I'd want to take the effort to get it all on there.

One thing I notice: If LibraryThing can't find your book, it seems to use a default "cover photo". It would be nice if you could upload a scan yourself. But perhaps that's gilding the lily.

:teeth: We've made another convert...

I think that LibraryThing gets the images from Amazon, and I'm fairly sure that Amazon has a feature that lets users upload features of the books. 'Course, I can't guarantee how successful that is, since my computer refused to let that actually work the last time I tried to help Amazon out (with Danker's Benefactor--I'm the only guy on LibraryThing who has that :hehe:). *mumbles at his computer*

I look forward to seeing the beginnings of your new library, Curt. :thumb:

The only reason I haven't used it is because I don't want to pay money and I have quite a few more than 200 books. Some of them are crappy, to be sure, but I think I can come up with more than 200 good books.

Sort your catalog by "shared" books. Gray people with no number means you're the only person on librarything.com with that book. Blue people have a number under them, showing how many other people have the book.

I'm not sure whether there's a quick and easy way to do it. I just browsed through my library and counted all of the ones that have a grey, numberless figure at the right-hand side, designating no other members in possession of the book.

It's worse than that. I only put things on my wishlist that I can't buy right at the moment or just want to remember to look for on ebay. Generally something doesn't have time to be on my wishlist because I just can't stop hitting that "one-click" ordering button. Exactly. And before every storm we go around and snap a ton of digital pics just in case. Now some losses you can't prepare like that for, but a hurricane I can. Generally when you put a large quantity of something that will end up being a hefty replacement cost, the insurance company expects an inventory. And isn't it self-absorbed? One reason I never liked blogging is that it's self-centered - the assumption is that other people actually care what you think, which is a mighty presumptuous and pompous thing to assume! Isn't this the same thing? Like, get real; no one cares what books I've read. The only reason for me to do it is so I can get some perverted self-satisfaction out of pretending or hoping I'm important enough that someone actually cares what books I own.

Sigh. I'm glad I'm going fishing tomorrow.

:dizzy:

One Bad Pig

Actually, I think it's nice to see what books others have. A book seen here might look interesting, and I can ask the owner about it before dashing off to buy/borrow it.

There's also an option to make your profile private, which hides your library from view.

Gideon Brown
July 17th 2007, 10:31 PM
And it also seems like yet another way to label people (and thereby dehumanize them): "You own that book? Oh, I see; you must be this type of person." As if human personalities are so simple to define and categorize.

And, my butt is itchy.

In any case, I made my collection 'private'... for now.

Same here. Which is why it really ticks me off when books don't have bibliographies. (I'd mention DJ's as an example, but you specified "good points", so... :wink:)

And some I expected a lot of people to have, few did, things that I bought on the discount rack at Barnes & Noble. Mostly it's not really common things, maybe that's why it was on the discount rack (like the History of Venice or Secret Archives of the Vatican), but hey. Is that pretty common?

JB
September 8th 2007, 12:46 PM
The eBooks are a tricky one. I have a number of PDF files of works like, say, Summa Theologiae. I don't count those.

However, I do have (in PDF form) a slightly pre-publication copy of After the Death of God by John Caputo and Gianni Vattimo, edited by one of my professors, Jeffrey Robbins. Unlike the Summa, I do count that one.

Inconsistent? Perhaps a bit, but it seems somehow more appropriate.

-------------------------------------------

While rummaging through storage, we found an 1876 copy of The Bible Looking Glass (http://www.rubylane.com/shops/bluedolphin/item/rl2047?gbase=1). Needless to say, I'm the only person on LibraryThing who has one. :teeth: It's pretty darn cool, too! Plus, between the pages there are a bunch of newspaper clippings from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, as well as an old valentine and a gospel tract. The book itself is beautifully decorated and has some neat poems and stuff. I really like Richard Rolle's "What Is In Heaven":

Ther is lyf withoute ony deth,
And ther is youthe withoute ony elde;
And ther is alle manner welthe to welde:
And ther is rest without ony travaille;
And ther is pees without ony strife,
And ther is alle manner lykinge of lyf;
And ther is bright somer ever to se,
And there is nevere wynter in that countrie;
And ther is more worshipe and honour,
Then evere hade kynge other emperour.
And ther is grete melodie of aungeles songe,
And ther is preysing hem amonge.
And ther is alle manner frendshipe that may be,
And ther is evere perfect love and charite;
And ther is wisdom without folye,
And ther is honeste without vileneye.
Al these a man may joyes of hevene call;
Ac yutte the most sovereyn joye of alle
Is the sighte of Goddes bright face,
In wham resteth alle mannere grace.

The curious thing is...there doesn't seem to be that many people into Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near Eastern studies--it all seems to be Christian/New Testament stuff.:sigh:

A friend I care a lot for gave it to me, what can I say? :shrug: In point of fact, I haven't even cracked it open.

The (there's quite a few books in there that are still TBR, and I've got at least four or five shipments of book(s) on the way1) Curtmudgeon

1 Yeah, Amazon.com and Alibris.com have my bank card number back on speed-dial. :eek: Nerdbooks may be next. And I'm really lusting over the Talmud/Mishnah sale on over at Artscrolls.2

2 I may need an Intervention here. But, please, not too soon.

Has anyone else noticed that librarything will sometimes delete the covers on some books you search for and add even if it already has the book in its records?

Well, I'm up to 170 now. This is crazy. For every book I read, I buy two more. Maybe the fact that I have to pay money once I have over 200 will help me stop buying books :pray:

BTW - I ALSO took advantage of the big Artscroll discounts... got myself Volume 1 and 2 of tractate Sheviis from the Jerusalem Talmud. Yummy.

Whoops . Seems it isn't actually letting save the changes I make to my account (I originally had it on private). Stand by.
I've added quite a few more over the past few days.

Is there any way to view somone's library by most recent books added?

Also, was it someone on here who gave me a comment? I can't figure out how to view it. Was the comment anything important?
