I've got a domain and a hosting plan (with PHP and MySQL) and it's time to use it for anything other than hosting holiday photos.

I'm going to put an instance of Wordpress on it, just to play around with, but ultimately, I'd like to put a CMS up there rather than faff around with static pages.

What would you recommend as a starting point? I am technical and will be up for getting under the hood, but for my first foray, I'd need something pretty user friendly.

Lets stick with free/open source for now. Not averse to paying for the right package in future once I find my feet.

I absolutely adore Drupal. How easy is it to install? Bear in mind, I am a Microsoft lickspittle :teeth:!

I've found something cool called XAMPP which I'm using as an offline sandbox for playing with CMS made simple.

Jnthn, I'd like to help, but I don't know what the acronym CMS stands for....Heh. It stands for "Content Management System". It's an alternative way of creating a website as opposed to creating a flat-file structure.

Drupal's probably the only CMS I could namecheck, but I didn't want to default to it.

I use Joomla for about all of my sites. Never had any problems and easy to use.
