Does anyone know of anyone who defends the 444 BC date as the beginning date for Daniel's 490 year prophecy?

Yes. Basically all the Dispy's.

Do you happen to know what they point to as the ending event for the 490 years? I figure that would bring it down to about 42 A.D. and I can't imagine what is of significance then.

Generally Dispy's take the 70 weeks and split it into 69 and 1. The 69th in their view ended at the cross (or Triumphal Entry, which is not a material difference). The 70th hasn't yet begun, and will begin at the Secret Rapture which removes the church so God can finish His plan for the Jews.
Of course, as I've discussed numerous times on this board, those constructs are completely unbiblical for a host of reasons. I'm simply supplying the information you asked for.

DJ,
Scan down to the older threads in this section to threads on Daniel 9 or the 70 Weeks.

Actually I have found that the 444 BC date for the Decree to rebuild Jerusalem given to Nehemiah is off by exactly 2 years and it was actually given on Nisan first of 442 BC.
The reason why no one has the chronology of the 69 weeks correct is because they do not take into account the Jubilee Year.
Sir Anderson, by proposing a Biblical or Prophetical Calender of 360 Days for a Year came close however, it does not accuratly account for the years themselves.
The point is that in 69 Weeks of Years you have 483 Years however, during that time you would have exactly 9 Jubilee Years that must be subtracted out for a total time ticked off the clock of exactly 474 Years. Then, subtract the non-zero year between BC and AD from 442 BC gives you 441 which, when subtracted from our 474 Years yields exactly 33 AD for the Messiah to be "cut off" which is precisely when the crucifixion occured.
The Jubilee System is exaclty how both John the Baptist and Y'shua knew when to start their Ministries and, further, explains why he castigated the leaders of the nation for not knowing that he was, in fact, the Messiah predicted by Daniel.
Clear it up any for ya?
