  1. A beginner's guide to philosophy

by , September 6th 2012 at 03:32 AM (Rambling Thoughts)
Want to appear intelligent but in a vague, unfocussed sense? Want to impress girls at parties by questioning their existence? Want to be unemployable? Philosophy just may be for you. In the past, philosophy has been the province of highly trained professionals fully insured by their guild against existential crises. Now, by virtue of a deregulated uncertainty market, you too can speculate about the nature of knowledge and meaning.

Socrates. Socrates was a pest. He went to the market ...

  2. Sugar and Salt

Saw this quote in my paper the other day and it got me thinking.

“I’ve been dipping out of the sugar canister too often, worrying more about how it looks when my teenager rolls his eyes than bring healing to his hurts. I’d never pour sugar on his scraped leg, but I’ve scooped it in his hurting heart. Platitudes and syrupy religion rarely help, only salt.” – Marketta Gregory

The four stages of life are: Brahmachari (student), Grihasta (Householder) Vanaprasta (forest dweller or Hermit in semi retirement) Sannyasi (the renounced one in full retirement) and the Dharma of each is different.

I am particularly interested in the 'forest dweller' stage since it corresponds to ...

  5. A new Lord's Prayer

As a non-Christian I still find resonances with some of the great passages of the Bible from my childhood. Sometimes I attempt to rewrite them to better express how I feel now. The Lord's prayer has always been a favourite.

    To Whom it May Concern
Dwelling in the field of potentiality beneath and within all things,
You, for whom the very search is Holy
May every being act in accordance with the well-being of all
May the actions of all beings in this physical ...
