Seriously... my wife kept wanting a dog, and I kept dragging my feet, and wasn't very supportive. Eventually, she asked me to go to a Pet Fair with her, and I HAD A FEELING we were coming home with a dog.

We spent all day checking out the various booths in this "PET FAIR", looking at dogs from Kennel Clubs, Shelters, individuals... they were running special deals on "adoptions".

AMAZINGLY, we left there without a dog. That was a Saturday. The next day, Sunday, my wife wanted to go back.

Yup, we came home with a dog. His name was Lee, but that just didn't fit, so I asked her if I could name him. He is now Jake, and he loves it, although sometimes he likes to be called Jacob.

(Please don't move this thread yet, I'm getting there!)

Jake was HER dog, but for some reason, he always hung around me. When we come home from somewhere, she gets all excited and calls Jake, and he comes running full throttle, AROUND her, and comes to me. :smug:

When a thunderstorm comes, Jake crawls under my desk if I'm there, or under the end table if I'm in my recliner.

This morning, while preaching, I was trying to describe my relationship with God. It's not "buddy buddy", and "fear of the Lord" doesn't mean "live in terror".... and I was having a hard time relating the "awesomeness" of God, and how I worship Him, yet I feel the closeness and Comfort He provides through His Spirit.

A few minutes ago, Jake, who had been asleep on my couch in my office, got up and stretched, then eased over to me to let me scratch his back, tug on his ears, pat his head, etc. And it HIT me!

Now, no analogy is PERFECT, but I started to think about what Jake sees in me. I am his provider, defender, feeder, companion... yet I "own" him. He doesn't fear me, even when I pretend to take a swipe at him for something he did -- he knows I would never hurt him.

Yet, my wife will often observe, "yeah, he just lays there staring at you, like he's your biggest admirer! You are his KING!"

And, I thought, God is my KING! Yet I don't creep into his presence in fear -- I enter his presence BOLDLY, knowing he loves me and has my best interests at heart, AND, knows what's best for me.

Jake is teaching me about God, as we speak.
