If it's okay with the moderators, I would like to open this thread up to Christian and non-Christian participation alike.

So, circumcision. There is a large anti-circumcision movement (and I'm not talking about certain rites of circumcision like was touched on in the other thread, I just mean circumcision itself) that contends that it is inherently an act of mutilation against a healthy body part and is a barbaric ancient practice that should be disposed with. Quite honestly, if I weren't at all religious, I would probably be inclined to agree. But I am, and there's the rub. Although as New Covenant Christians we're obviously not obligated to circumcise our young, I have a hard time thinking that God would have at one point commanded a rite that can be thought of as inherently barbaric/wrong (I do ask that we not bring up the standard list of "OT atrocities" here; that's not my point).

I'm in a political discussion group and virtually everybody there, Christian or not, is against circumcision. I basically don't oppose it for the reasons elucidated above, but I haven't studied the subject to the depths that others have. So, what tacks can we take here?
