Timothy Geithner -- the same shmoe who is part of the Bernake and Paulson gang, who are raping our economy via the fed, and doing every conceivable thing wrong for recovery -- is now openly agreeing with Russia and China to a global currency, to replace the dollar, in order to "fix" the economic problem. Seems he may have slipped up and let the cat out of the bag too soon.
I wonder how much of the general public actually knows this, as it is silent in mainstream...

I am in the process of reading Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal by William E. Leuchtenburg. I have studied history my entire life and took 40 credit hours while getting my biology degree. Ryokan and AW think the gold standard is nuts. Actually nuts can be used as money, if people were so minded. Gold has properties that make it far more suitable for use as money, though.

Hey, I have a question about speculation.
I don't really understand something that Rothbard and Mises say a lot. I don't have the books here, but I can kind of remember their basic premise.
They say that speculation is not harmful. All it does is speed up the process at which the prices reach the equilibrium.
Can anyone explain this to me?

I was just thinking how little cash I use nowadays.
Basically I only use cash at fast food restaurants and vending machines, and now most FF restaurants take debit cards.
I wonder how long before we become a completely cashless society?

Okay, so I have a question about massive debt.
Let's pretend that we have this current crisis, where everyone is in a massive amount of debt. But instead of injecting hundreds of billions of newly created money into the economy, our government does it the Austrian way. The government does nothing. They let the economy deflate back to normal levels. Prices fall, wages fall, and all the necessary adjustments start taking place and the economy starts to recover.

This is something I've been thinking about, and I thought I would start a thread since there are reports coming out about consumer prices dropping in the past month or two (e.g., http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081119/ap_on_bi_go_ec_fi/economy), and I thought it would be worthwhile to discuss the fear associated with dropping prices (such as that expressed in the above article).

First of all, I am referring to a 100% reserve banking system and no central bank whatsoever.
1) Would the value of gold be subject to inflation/deflation just like paper money? Pretend that the supply of gold remains the same, yet the amount of goods and services in the economy increase. The value of each unit of money would increase right?

Over the weekend happened to watch a news program on CNBC about the contracting economy. What caught my eye was the opening sequence where a women was invoking the name of god to save here home and homes of other people in the opening sequence.

I saw a thread on here regarding the concept of the deflationary spiral. But what about an inflationary spiral?
As we all know, inflation is the devaluation of the current medium of exchange. This means the loss of purchasing power of all current income and income saved from the past, such as savings, bonds, etc....

I read an article that mentioned how the increased debt from gov bailouts of things like investment banks can hurt the financial situation in the country right now because of the increased risk in those companies because they will have more debt instead of more equity. According to another article, one thing that S. Korea is doing or may do to protect itself from global fallout right now is to give tax cuts to investors. I have noticed that there is some discussion over the use of escalating tax brackets in the Canadian currency thread and I thought it would be interesting to discuss it.

Seems like there will be no relief from 2008 RMD this year.
The situation:
RMD is the required minimum distribution amount from Individual retirement accounts. The RMD for 2008 is based on the value of the account as of December 31, 2007. As we all know the current value of those accounts is way lower than their December 2007 balances. To calculate the RMD based on 12/31/07 value will force people to sell their investments at losses. I have an interest in economics (mostly from the Austrian School), but I also have an interest in history as well.
I am mostly familiarized with the works of the Context Group, which has led me to search for scholarly works about ancient economies (anything from say, around 3rd century A.C. and before that). In the VP debate, Biden blamed the current economic crisis on Bush's policy of deregulation of the economy.

The shadowmaster once attended a symposium which featured "Zig Ziglar", among others. He advanced the notion that one should should only work for a golden rule company and should only run a golden rule company. Such a company uses the golden rule with respect to it customers and it its employees. Perhaps Ben and Jerry's (at least initially) is an example.
If we had such a philosophy in our companies, would we have the current problems?

Can someone who is better versed in economics than I am please give me your thoughts on the “price system” and “energy credit” ideas of the group Technocracy Inc? Now if that were true, eventually the people would catch on - or are they altogether idiotic - and refuse to buy more. Say you bought a lemon car because you fell for a great ad bought for millions by Zoom Automobile Works, Inc (ZAWI, pronounced 'Zowie', tra la la). Would you buy from ZAWI again?

I am looking for a way to keep somewhat current with the financial news, but I don't want to always be online or buy a WSJ issue to do so. I'm looking for info beyond personal financial management and am a senior finance major at school who typically does not do much to follow news. Barring some contractual agreement to the contrary, one's control over the thing should be (as much as possible) proportional to one's portion of ownership of it. But surely it is possible to purchase ownership of something while allowing someone else to manage it.
Side note: $300 was worth a lot more 100 years ago...

I plan on saving 2000 dollars in the next few months. Instead of letting it wait in my checking account, I thought I would try the stock market for the first time in my life.
The goal I've set is to earn 1200 to 2000. Would it be better to try for more expensive stock that have a proven earning record, or a mutual fund, or what? I used to think it was cool to read about penny stocks, but I would never invest in one.
I expect to use etrade. Maybe somebody can tell their success stories...

In some other thread, which I can't be arsed to look for, someone stated that the world produces enough food to feed everyone, the problem is merely transportation.
Is this true?
And if it is true, what kind of diet is that we could supply to everyone in the world? Fresh fruit, vegetables and protein? Can we do this without hormones, pesticides or over fishing ect?
And then finally, what about economics? Should we be feeding people for FREE?

I don't get this. I thought Federal law required banks to keep a certain amount (percentage?) of liquidity to prevent banks from having that problem. No one has thus far alleged that Bear Sterns was out of compliance so I don't quite understand what happened.
I also don't get why the buy out is a good thing. I read that employee shareholders are really steamed about the $2/share price and some are talking about voting the deal down. I kinda see their point.
It seems like the problem was more...

I remember almost every economic boom and crash we have had since the 50's.
Now we have the sub prime mortgages. This looks to me like greed x 2.

Just looking for advice, opinions, whatever relevant information or thoughts you might have.
I’m a permanent resident of the U.S. I visit Europe for several weeks every three or four years. I thought it would be nice to open a savings account with a European bank in Euros.
