This is a list of the New Testament commentaries recommended by TWeb, volume by volume. They are listed according to the book of the Bible about which they are written. There are a few that are currently Out Of Print. The links take you directly to CBD in order to buy them or to just look at them. Is there a way to determine clearly the meaning of physis per usage? That is, natural by reason of nature (or birth, creation, inherent at inception, previously established etc...) or by reason of use, practice etc...?

I was looking up a note in Sanday and Headlam on Romans.
I am trying to figure out what Cod. 248 is and what the related documents are. The note was partly identifying variations in the Greek afaik. I have put crude alliterations of some of the Greek.

I'm debating with someone on what the word for sulfur meant to people in the 1st century, as well as whether hell is eternal punishment. Anyone here have some facts that would be useful for this debate?
Here's what my opponent offers.
Also, we were mainly debating about the meaning of the word kolasin, which is used in Matthew 25 and 1st John 4. If anyone has some insight on this, that would be great. My points are normal text, his are in quotes.

Hi,
Would someone help me please? I'm working on a refutation of a commentary for a friend who found it more than a little disturbing. I think it was way over-reaching but I want to make sure my ducks are in a nice straight row.
My problem is this: NKJV uses 'depression' where most other translations I've reviewed use 'weighed down' or something comparable. Is 'depression' an accurate translation? If so, is it the same as clinical depression (which I doubt in the extreme but those pesky ducks...

I'm near completion of a public domain edition of the NT, so that bi-lingual publications can be published without copyright hastles. My intention is to be quite conservative.
Specifically my edition is a modernisation of the ASV (Yes it has been done many times, but note the lack of consistency and sometimes erroneoneous/prejudiced renderings between editions).

Someone told me she heard that there were additional characters added to the Book of Acts a couple hundred years or so after it was written. I did some research and while I could not find the mention of these additional characters, I understand that the Western Text adds about 10% to the Alexandrian Text. I cannot find what this 10% entails, however. Does the 10% include the names of characters in the Book of Acts?

Just a quick question (and any good basic references are more than welcome!).
I'm trying to get a handle on the aorist passive subjunctive in NT Greek. I understand that the aorist tense doesn't have a good parallel in English - it refers to the action itself without reference to time. Passive voice has to do mainly with who is doing the action than the action itself. The subjunctive is a little less clear to me. As I understand it, though, it pertains to a likely (but uncertain) event.

Many older translations render the core of vs4 as "know how to possess his own vessel " some more contemporary editions render "learn to control his own body" (eg: NIV, ESV, NLT). The first rendering is literal and nonsensical, the later is in conflict with vs6. However there is a third option. That given by the RSV = "know how to take a wife for himself ".

From the thread on 1 Thes 4:4 I was lead to examine the Greek words used of body in the NT.
Specifically there are two, sōma and chrōs the later used but once, which from the lexicons I ascertain to mean "the outer surface of the body, the skin".
Now having a browse of BLB & Biblos very few versions render Acts 19:12 appropriately. The ESV, ISV, GWT & NLT being exceptions. The NIV simply avoids the word interpreting "him". The WEY interprets chrōs as "handled" presumably following the winding...

Acts 19:11 in NIV says “extraordinary miracles” and in KJV says "special miracles". Strongs shows the word “special” is marked with G3756 οὐ and G5177 τυγχάνω and “miracles” with G1411 δύναμις, but also notice that “miracles” with G4592 σημεῖονis also used elsewhere in the NT.
Could someone please explain “special” here and the distinction between the δύναμιςand σημεῖον for me? For some reason, I just aint getting it :blush:. (Sorry if this has already been done before)

I was looking at this verse on bible.org and also at the various translations at biblegateway, and every single version has Samuel telling Saul that Saul and his sons will "be with me " by the end of the next day. Since I don't actually know Hebrew I had trouble figuring out if those words were interpolated or if they're explicit translations.
So the question is this: Does Samuel actually announce that Saul will be with him (meaning either just dead, or possibly in paradise), or does the text...

On Paul’s list of χαρισματα (charismata) in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, there is this: γενη γλωσσων (genē glossōn) = ‘species of tongues’.
Note: the term is not ‘speaking in tongues’, although that is the charisma that is represented in this spot on the list of charismata.
Here is a comment by Thomas Charles Edwards in A Commentary on the First Epistle to the Corinthians (Hamilton, Adams & Co., 1885):

Anyway, I was idly surfing wikipedia and I came across this interesting claim.
The article gives as a source one R.M. Best but only gives the chapter and year out of his book and not the book's title (:doh:).
So, my curiosity was peeked and I thought I'd ask if this view holds any water. It seems fishy to me. I didn't think the ancients were aware of fractions beyond the very rudiments.

At first this seemed like and elementary question.
I had in the past considered this when considering the origin of sin.
From what I remember there was very little information about what the devil was like before Eden.
As to why the devil as the way he was, I am not sure if I got to the bottom of that.
