Well, I sure hope I'm posting this in the right section. This site has WAY too many forum categories, imo.
But anyways, I got a question for other Christians.
I myself do believe the Christian God exists. But I am wondering how it is that people can say they can have an actual 'relationship' with him, with God? How can you really have a two-sided relationship with someone who you can't even have a conversation with? I just can't really understand that quite well.

If we pray to God, we don't pray for Baptist things, or Jewish things, or Muslin things, or Catholic things. We ALL pray to our God for the exact same things regardless of our organized religious differences. We pray for God to protect our families, our friends, our neighbors, our country, peace on earth, an end to the pain and suffering of others, for food to feed the starving, that God may grant us peace within ourselves, and to give us an understanding of exactly what kind of person he wants...

I was raised a Sourhtern Baptist. As a child my life revolved around our church. I was a member of the RAs, boy scouts, choir, and almost everything else our church had to offer. I voluntered on weekends to help them do anything the church needed.
I can't say I was ever converted to another religion, but there was a single point in my life that made me think about the correctness of my religion specifically, and more importantly, religion in general.

Does Hinduism bear similarities to Satanism?
Hindus who accept the caste system or similar doctrines imply that a better life is defined by material gain and class. This is almost similar to Satanic beliefs (particularly LaVeyan Satanism), since emphasis on materialism is often associated with self-indulgence. Not only is the caste system materialistic, it also takes issue with those considered to be worthless and lowly, which many Satanists also believe. In the end, Hinduism resonates vaguely...

In Acts and Paul's letters, we learn of a group of early Jewish Christians (typically referred to as Nazarenes) who disagreed with Paul over the issue of which laws Gentiles were required to follow.
In certain places, Paul writes that even Peter disagreed with himself over the issue of table fellowship with uncircumcised Christians after men were sent from James (Jesus' brother) to check on Paul and his ministry.
According to Paul, he says that James, Peter and John did not disagree with him...

I had read in one study Bible I have that the longevity of the Biblical patriarchs from Genesis 5, in which ten patriarchs with exceptionally long lifespans are named, is seen as a sort of 'borrowing' from the Sumerian King list - in which ten kings are listed before the flood with exceptionally long lives, if I'm not mistaken.
This is especially apparent when one reads the life spans of Sumerian kings before and after the flood where, like the life spans of the Patriarchs in the Bible, are...

Why does God allow the innocent to die? Kids suffer and die horrable deaths. Friends and relatives die for no obvious reason. Millions of innocent and good people have died in wars and natural catasthropies. Not only do they die, but they may suffer incrediable pain in the process.
I want your opinion, or that of whatever organized religion you may be associated with.
Why does God allow this?

Previously, the opinions of political and religious rulers were forcibly established as truth. Violent consequences awaited any who would dare try to verify the assumptions upon which their rulers based their opinions. During the past 200 years or so in North America and parts of Europe, persons were able to verify various assumptions without expecting the previous level of persecution.

I believe the Bible, and uncompromisingly so, having studied it for the past 30 years. However, I now find myself in a quandary. Eight years ago, I read the Qur’an and found that there is harmony between the principal teachings of the Bible and the Qur’an, without compromising any teaching or damaging the integrity of any verse in either book.
I know that this claim may seem utterly ridiculous. Had anyone even suggested such a thing to me 8 years ago, I probably would not have...

I have often heard it said that one of the most influential variables in a person's religious affiliation (or lack thereof) is in the religious affiliation (or lack thereof) of that person's parents. So my question is...how do the religious views of your parents compare with your own? Do you hold the same views as they do? Did you convert away from the religion you were raised in at some point?

In Romans, Paul said that he was collecting charity from several cities with large Gentile congregations and planning on donating the money to the Jerusalem Church. But, Paul also said that he had planned on going to Spain (AFAIK, this would have been Paul's first visit and it's unknown if he ever made it).
The next question necessarily arises for me. Was there already a Christian community in Spain (perhaps started by one of the Twelve as apocryphal literature suggests) or did Paul plan on...

Hey guys, I'm not really sure where to put this topic but, following the topic on the Ebionites and Nazarenes, I've heard of a book by New Testament? scholar Ray Pritz where he argues that the Nazarenes were clearly distinct from the Ebionites (a second century sect - possibly with Samaritan origins, i.e., rejection of the temple) and were a group originating from the earliest followers of Jesus. They were Jews like James, John, Peter and Paul and also like them, they continued to follow...

In the New Testament, James, Jesus' brother, says not to consume meat that has been sacrificed to idols.
However, in his epistles, Paul says it doesn't matter that meat has been sacrificed to idols and it is safe to eat it.
Not that this issue is relevant nowadays, but which command should Christians follow?
Are not the two verses contradictory?
Note: The prohibition on meat by James is in Acts 15, Paul allowing sacrificed meat to be consumed is in one of his epistles, but if you do not...

I was looking to start a thread about the New Testament use of Tanakh from a non-Christian perspective, to discuss with Christians. I'm a non-Christian theist not affiliated with any of the many One True Religions ™...but I can't find an appropriate forum in which to post.

Ooookay.. So my Dad believes in conciousness.. Mostly buddhist principles.. We are all one consciousness etc.. Now he tries to convince me that his religion is right and that I'm crazy because I'm christian.. Well.. a) I wouldn't call myself Christian and b) I don't argue with him.. OK, maybe that wasn't their intent, but they DID give me the tools!
Many years ago, I was a Police Officer in Ohio.
We had a number of "counterfeit currency" cases, and the FBI responded by putting on a seminar in Chicago. I was nominated to attend the two day course.
The instructions from the local Agent In Charge were simple - "bring a known good $20 bill".
I was just a youngster, probably 22 years old, and this was one of my first "adult" events. Free coffee, donuts, fancy auditorium...

Why Jesus was not the Messiah:
(1) Jesus was claimed to be a (bodily or blood) descendant of David (Ro 1:3), but it is unclear how that could be. According to both Matthew and Luke, Mary's husband Joseph was a descendant of David (though they disagree about the exact genealogy). However, both Matthew and Luke deny that Joseph was Jesus's biological father, so their genealogies of Joseph (Mt 1:2-16, Lu 3:23-38) should not be regarded as genealogies of Jesus. I mean - what's harder... making somebody speak gibberish and have all kinds of confusion as a result? Or speak a few words that people can understand.
I've had this discussion with Fred Flanders - his grammar seems to be lacking on a continual basis. I mean, we ALL misspell a word, or use inappropriate grammar at times, but Fred seems to be an expert at this. I have encouraged him to seek the Spirit on this, and maybe this could be fixed!

I noticed there was another discussion in the Christian forums about speaking in tongues, and I thought to share again that this phenomena is not limited to Charismatic Christians but is known through out various religious traditions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism where it is known as kundalini talk.
It is believed that when the spirit of God passes through the vocal chords, it stimulates them resulting in one's speaking in 'gibberish'.

Has anyone heard of MasterPath? How about Sri Gary Olsen?
The reason I ask, MasterPath is making a stop in my little town. They are going to be showing a movie, "Video Presentation of Sri Gary Olsen", followed by a break, followed by an introductory talk.
From what I've read it sounds a lot like Eckankar revisited?

I see much more of a continuity between Catholic and Orthodox churches with earliest expressions of Christian faith than Protestant denominations (bar Anglican and high ecclesial forms of Lutheranism and Presbyterianism). Though I don't think that invalidates Protestantism, I simply think that it evolved out of other needs and other myths.
The Eucharist has always been the symbol of Christian identity, filled with its rich atonement and sacrificial motifs. Though, in some Protestant churches...

I'd like to hear some of your views on what the sword Jesus tells his apostles tells his apostles to arm themselves with should be taken literally or metaphorically.
Certainly Jesus said that two swords were enough, so how could Jesus not meant that the apostles were to carry real swords?
More, Peter seems to have understood this as carrying an actual sword when he chopped off a slave's ear.
For those who take this passage allegorically, how do you come to your conclusions?

The New Testament says that Peter converted Cornelius and that Gentiles were converted in Acts 11. Ignoring Cornelius' conversion as an exception rather than the norm and the conversion of Gentiles in Antioch (where it does not say whether they fully adhered to Jewish law - became Jewish first then accepted Jesus' message), can it be safe to conclude that Paul was the first to convert Gentiles?
I mean, the early Christians wanted Gentiles to convert to Judaism before they accepted Jesus as...

According to my faith, Christianity is full of truth. I love christianity.
Yet why is it that here on T-Web there are scores and scores of Christians thumping their bibles over other people's heads? Asking for proof or demanding apologies from religions that aren't more like their own?
It's important to remember that Muslims don't believe Muhammed was a Prophet because marrying 9 year old girls is just a wonderful thing to do; they don't NEED a reason to believe.

I just read an Ann Landers column in which she discussed the topic of forced greetings in your religious services. A forced greeting is when your religious leader, during the services, announces that everyone in the congregation must turn and greet someone they don’t know. Apparently, Ms. Landers got a lot of mail on this topic with opinions all over the place.
At my current synagogue, my rabbi does this. This is the only synagogue that I’ve ever attended that does this. I think it is a good...
