  • Turn Off that Lame Christmas Music, and Crank Up the Thanksgiving Tunes!!

Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday of the year, but it's passed over so quickly in favor of Christmas by so many Americans now. Heck, seems like Christmas starts as soon as Halloween is over nowadays. I think it's time to slow things down and really appreciate how wonderful this holiday is with some fantastic Thanksgiving music. Yep, believe it or not, there are some good tunes you can play on Thanksgiving that are not silly Adam Sandler songs. I'll start with The Man in Black himself,

Looking to replace all that dreadful early Christmas music with some music that's more Thanksgiving-y? Check out Retro Obscuro's playlist of 50s-60s songs about food! With classics like:

"Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)", "Bread & Butter", "If I Knew You Were Coming I’d Had Baked A Cake" and a song I won't be singing for Thanksgiving, "I Love Onions".

Here's something completely different! A Celtic Thanksgiving podcast. Great for people who love toe-tapping Celtic folk that evokes images of beautiful fall days, harvest time, and lots of songs about turkey.

Thanksgiving isn't Thanksgiving without the FIGHT!!

        That's what
        - She

Without a clear-cut definition of sin, morality becomes a mere argument over the best way to train animals
        - Manya the Holy Szin (The Quintara Marathon)

I may not be as old as dirt, but me and dirt are starting to have an awful lot in common
        - Stephen R. Donaldson

Johnny Cash is always good. Since I've become Orthodox and am on the New Calendar, I started gearing up for Christmas 8 days ago (and the Nativity canon started making its appearance 2 days ago). I still love Thanksgiving, though.

If I'm honest, I'm not big on Christmas. Though the 25th is obviously an old church tradition, I think it's more likely Jesus was born in the Spring or Summer (a date I've heard bandied about decades ago was Sept. 11th, 3 BC, based on star charts, but that seems a bit too specific). Mostly I can't stand the commercialization of the holiday, and I think it's...strange? regrettable maybe? that so much is made of Christmas when we don't see this same sort of attention to Pasha, which the earliest church seemed to hang so much more importance on.

Yeah, Pascha's definitely a bigger deal in my tradition. I agree that Christmas is way over-commercialized. And the Christmas season is a bit awkward because I'm fasting from meat and dairy when everyone else is going to Christmas parties. The early church didn't seem too hung up on dates, though (making the New Calendar/Older Calendar dispute rather ironic) - the Transfiguration was certainly moved from its actual date (traditionally believed to have happened fairly shortly before the Crucifixion). The East initially celebrated Christmas and the baptism of Jesus simultaneously on Jan. 6, only establishing a separate feast in the late 4th century.

Malls only play the music early in order to get people thinking about Christmas early and thus, more likely to buy items related to the holiday.
