  • Police blocking entrance to nearby school

I saw about 4 police/sheriff cars blocking the segment of street going to the high school near my place this morning.

But I quickly remembered there had been temporary no parking signs posted down that street. I realized there was some planned event. I don't quite know what it was.

    oh well.

    [added the following:]
It was some sort of mock crash (like DUI incident) demonstration to show "the potential impacts of drinking and driving."

That de-escalated quickly. Maybe it was a MOPS group having stroller races.

Oh yeah. Highschools do that sort of scared straight stuff all the time. IIRC, it's kind of like DARE; it doesn't really work. I've had three ex-students die driving drunk or distracted. Still, makes the community outreach office of the local PD feel extra special for the day.

We had one of those at my HS the week before prom. It was a nice way to get out of class for an hour.

Pretty much. If someone's close friend dies doing something stupid, that MIGHT persuade a HS student to change his ways. Anything less close to home is unlikely to have much of an impact.

I know a 23yr. old guy who totaled a car two weekends ago while drunk.
It is the second car he's totaled in this manner.

It casts a pall of sadness over me because there is nothing I can do about it.
Actually YOU put Trump in the White House. He wouldn't have gotten 1% of the vote if it wasn't for the widespread spiritual and cultural devastation caused by progressive policies. There's no "this country" left with your immigration policies, your "allies" are worthless and even more suicidal than you are and democracy is a sick joke that I hope nobody ever thinks about repeating when the current order collapses. - Darth_Executor striking a conciliatory note in Civics 101
