Do we use people we don't even know personally and their screw ups to try to justify our own behavior? Sometimes, I think we do so almost instinctively.

Not just politics, but if anyone around us screws up it can become a source of pride.
My best guess is that this is why gossip is discouraged - because it becomes a source of pride and subsequently, death.Actually YOU put Trump in the White House.
