  • Space Ice Cream

Either ya hate it or ya love it.

We started putting this in our kids' Christmas Stockings after tasting some at the Johnson Space Center in Houston over 40 years ago*.

This was the first year we didn't include some, cause it seemed like the kids (now grown) didn't really appreciate it.

My oldest granddaughter, 21, was genuinely disappointed (in a very polite way) so I had a bunch shipped to her house. It arrived today. She's in hog heaven!

*I'm eating some as we type - possibly from that same batch!

I've never had the stuff. Always wanted to try it though.

      It's okay.

While not the most verbose culinary evaluation I've ever read, I think it's probably pretty "spot on".

Actually, I think it has more to do with the good memories - Christmases together - and the "Astronaut Ice Cream" was always part of the fun when they were little. Good memories.

                I don't really like it.

Trying the Neapolitan and Mint Chocolate Chip this afternoon. Granddaughter and I are sharing these moments together apart.

Yup, at first it's like putting a piece of chalk in your mouth, then it kinda turns creamy....

I would post links proving it was actually enjoyed by astronauts on space missions, but all of the links I have found so far blow that theory into thin air, so I'll not even mention them.

Never heard of it, never had it.

I've heard of freeze-dried astronaut food, but didn't know it was available to the public.

I've seen it for sale at the Cosmosphere (space-themed museum in Hutchinson, Kansas).

Have you ever left a used ice-cream bowl out and let the ice-cream dry on the spoon, then later eat off the crust? It's like that but fluffier.

I love freeze dried corn and peas. I get them to add to my ramen for lunch, but I can also eat them straight out of the can.
