I had braces for 4 years, all throughout high school. Then I joined the Navy, and couldn't wear my retainer in boot camp. My teeth are right back where they were before braces.

I am going to get this rubber thing later to help my teeth stay. I probably needed them, but wasn't able to get them because of my RSD/CRPS*.
*Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome are the two names I know of for my condition. The latter seems to be more common now than when I was younger.Comment

I have never had braces. I have one crooked molar where I didn't wear a spacer when I was a kid and lost the baby tooth early. I use it as a scratching post for my tongue. I do have stained teeth though. Dentist says it is because my mom took some tetracycline when I was in the womb.

MelMak's issue was that his lower jaw wasn't growing, and his lower teeth were hitting the roof of his mouth right behind the upper front teeth and weakening them. So he needed braces to start moving his upper teeth back into their proper position, and the surgery, done after he had stopped growing, was to move his lower jaw forward.
Then the braces for a year following surgery to make sure everything was lining up ok. He still uses a retainer.
