  • MSM is getting desperate...

Calling all billionaires interested in saving democracy. Please invest in newspapers.

HELP DESPERATELY WANTED: Multi-billionaires willing to invest in the newspaper business — not for profit or personal promotion, but for the future of democracy.

Maybe your last name is Bezos, Omidyar, Buffett, Soros, Gates, Soon-Shiong. Maybe you're Laurene Jobs, who just bought a majority stake in The Atlantic. It doesn’t matter. Local journalism needs your wallet, your generosity, your trust and your promise to not interfere.

In return, journalists promise strong, fair, accurate and essential journalism that informs and holds public figures accountable.

Journalism is in serious trouble. The latest player injured in action is the New York Daily News, a venerable and scrappy 99-year-old tabloid that just got its legs chopped off at the knees.

...Lest you think the news is good for digital news, it’s not. At least 23 percent of the highest-traffic digital-only news outlets experienced layoffs during the same period, according to the Pew study.

Maybe if Journalism actually was fair and accurate they wouldn't be failing?

Looks like a list of billionaire liberal activists. Conservatives need not apply

I'm always still in trouble again

"You're by far the worst poster on TWeb" and "TWeb's biggest liar" --starlight (the guy who says Stalin was a right-winger)
"Overall I would rate the withdrawal from Afghanistan as by far the best thing Biden's done" --Starlight

I thought so too. The irony in promising fair and accurate reporting for a business that is failing because it is NOT fair and accurate was too much to pass up.

Funny how such a liberal business is begging to be rescued by the rich 1%, huh?

They COULD just step it up and begin fair and accurate reporting - and I think demand would increase!

I had to double check your link and then check again to be sure you weren't quoting a story from The Onion.

What is it you always say about not being able to tell the difference between a liberal and a parody of one?

Journalism through out the history of humanity since writing was invented has had the same problems and positive points that journalism does today, nothing new. There are other reasons why journalism is declining. First is technology: Today through the technology of the internet journalism and anyone who claims to be a journalist can access the whole world. In the previous history of journalism access was somewhat limited, but gradually these limitations disappeared. Second, journalism is still alive and well on the internet and other mass media ranging from excellent to horrendously terrible. Third, I believe quality journalism still exists in sources like BBC on the internet, radio and television.

Like everything else journalism will evolve over time. Some survive and adapt, and others fail to change and do not survive.

Glendower: I can call spirits from the vasty deep.
                  Hotspur: Why, so can I, or so can any man;
But will they come when you do call for them? Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 1, Act III:

go with the flow the river knows . . .

                  Frank

I do not know, therefore everything is in pencil.

At first I thought the same, but it specifically says that the digital online ones are suffering just as much. Which to me means that people are not willing to read rags they can't trust. And especially are not willing to pay good money to be lied to.

I've said it before, but the idea of an honest, world-weary journalist working late into the night and pursuing dozens of leads in a dogged pursuit of the truth is more idealistic fantasy than reality. The truth is that pretty much every major media outlet started over the past few centuries has been started almost exclusively by a rich white man who wanted to "tell it like it is" from his perspective. This notion that journalism has a proud tradition of being neutral and unbiased has never really been true. Even back in the day of Walter "The Most Trusted Man In America" Cronkite, the news was extremely biased, but most people didn't realize it because "The Big 3" -- ABC, NBC, and CBS -- had a monopoly on the flow of information. They decided not just what was reported but how it was reported. That's changed now thanks to the "New Media" which has really done nothing more than pull back the curtain and expose the man who is pulling all the levers.

True. a "free" press doesn't mean an unbiased press. It just means the press is free to be as biased as they want to be. And they are.

Wrong... today's media have dropped any pretense of fairness or objectivity in their "hate Trump" campaign -- you just don't notice it because you're of the same stripe.

I think you are overstating the problem with Journalism, not a good scapegoat, because there do exist competent reliable journal sources, and good judgement can sort through and compare different source. Your neglecting the fact this is an age old problem, and nothing new. We live in a highly polarized cynical world that declares everything that disagrees with them as 'fake news.'
