  • Getting a new dog soon

Well I think I will be getting a new schnauzer soon. It's been long enough since Taz died.

I am pretty sure I want another miniature schnauzer. I have been looking for a dog to rescue like I did Taz, but I don't seem to see many on the pet finding sites. I want a young schnauzer, 3 years or less. Most I have seen are older ones with health problems. I can't deal with that right now after having Taz grow old and blind and had to be put to sleep. So either a young rescue or a new puppy.

My cousin has a friend who raises and trains K9's for police and forestry and also raises schnauzers so I know it is a person who is not a puppy mill. But she won't be raising another litter till spring. Till then I will be looking for a rescue. Wish me luck.

Also need to think of a good name for Miniature Schnauzer who belongs to a pirate.

Meh Gerbil once suggested "the Plank" - that way I could say "I need to walk the Plank"

I once considered getting a boat and naming it "Visitation" - so my secretary could tell callers "he's not in the office today, he's out on visitation".

Or, that Christian comedian who calls his bed "the word", so he can tell people, "I was 'in the word' all morning".

In all seriousness, this is a tough one.

I didn't WANT a dog - my wife kept bringing it up, and she and my daughter would go to rescue shelters and "just look".

I kept thinking we're so close to retirement, and I want to travel, and there's the whole issue of the dog growing older sooner than us, and going through that "dog died" grief....

            But... Jake.

yep. I am thinking the same things, plus, if I get a puppy... How do I take care of him while at work? I have to go through the whole house breaking thing, teaching him not to chew on everything, cleaning up messes, and all that. Plus all the vet bills and not being able to leave him for too long unless I put him in a boarding kennel. Huge responsibility.

But my house feels empty without a dog in it. So does my life. I have had a dog most of my life except for a few years after I graduated high school and moved away. I lived in apartments for a few years and couldn't have pets. But when I got my first house, I got a dog again.

Yeah, I'm at my Church office, and Jake is in the corner keeping an eye on things.

                    jake in corner.jpg

When we went to be with my Pastor in Tyler, we had to find a doggy daycare - I had booked a dog-friendly hotel, but during the day, Jake needed to be somewhere. It was either "leave him in doggy camp at home" (there's a good facility in town) or make special arrangements on our trip.

It's a pain, but Jake is so faithful and seems so appreciative of anything.

Life would certainly be EASIER without him, but probably not near as interesting.

So I haven't had a puppy in about 28 years now. My last dog, Taz was a rescue.

If I do get a puppy, anyone have any advice on how to take care of him and work full time? At least for the first few months. I was thinking of getting one of those portable doggie playpens and setting it up in the basement. But the basement concrete floor might be too cold for a pup.

                        Get a cat.

                        Much less work.

I don't like cats. When you try to wrestle with them you end up in the ER.

You need a house cat, not a tiger.

Whenever I finally get another dog I'm gonna call him/her Dog but pronounced Dee-Oh-Gee, or D-O-G.

                              But that's just me.
