  • Anonymous Op-Ed from the NYT

I was amazed to see this cross my news feed. It was apparently written by a senior White House staffer, clearly a Republican (I'm pretty sure Trump completely abandoned the practice of having opposition members in his staff and on his cabinet - loyalty and all that), and one who makes a clear distinction between policies and behavior. I wish it were possible for them to identify themselves, because I'm reasonably sure this will simply be dismissed as "fake news" by Trump supporters and defenders. Clearly, however, it's not possible to continue to guide/resist if you are not in the position any longer.

Though I disagree with some of the policies described as "good for America," that is how America works - sometimes the opposing party is in power and policies you disagree with are enacted. What I have long been more concerned about is the erosion and damage Trump does by his force of personality and lack of management ability ("Apprentice" not withstanding). Time after time we hear reports of a highly unstable White House environment, most recently from Woodward's book. We have seen his admiration for dictators and strongmen, and his horrendous treatment of long-term allies and friends. It is good to know there is a force in place that is containing him to some degree.
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy...returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King

I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong. Frederick Douglas

Come on, guys, we all know the math on this one:

The New York Times + Anonymous Source = Fake News
Some may call me foolish, and some may call me odd
But I'd rather be a fool in the eyes of man
Than a fool in the eyes of God

It appears Mike Pence is the internet's #1 suspect for authorship of the piece, particularly based on the presence of the unusual word "lodestar" in the article which is a Pence favorite.

Just reading the article myself I found the language quite weirdly polished in general for a staffer, but a career politician like Pence writing it would explain it.
"I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism" - George Orwell
"[Capitalism] as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evils. I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy" - Albert Einstein

If I may paraphrase what I saw someone else say about this: Does the author actually accomplish anything by writing this other than having a way to deflect criticism for serving in this administration several years from now?

Right, Pence wrote it. That makes perfect sense...

No, but this one is from the White house staff, and mirrors the severe problems revealed in Woodward's book. The reason for being anonymous is obvious, but the person will eventually be known. When that happens when he or she becomes public make any difference to you?

                Look up the word "anonymous".

I think he got a tip from his Bookie!

Even has the "lodestar" reference in it.

Actually, he or she is identified as "a senior official in the Trump administration", which could be any one of literally hundreds of people in Washington who hold that title -- and this assumes the individual even exists and this isn't just the Grey Lady writing fiction again.

When they're in a reputable outlet such as the NY Times they are trustworthy. Especially when, in this instance, it reinforces what has already been written by the likes of Tom Wolfe, Omarose and most reliably, Bob Woodward...all saying much the same thing. Namely, that Trump is totally unfit for office and dangerous for the USA and the world.

Please tell me that that's a typo and you mean "by extension the world", not extinction?

The trouble with fervent religious believers is they can have crazy apocalyptic beliefs and their religion can override common sense or normal reasoning, so learning that Pence actually felt called to destroy the world wouldn't totally shock me.

Personally I would vastly prefer Trump stays in office rather than being replaced by Pence, because:
                          1. He is utterly incompetent. Pence is actually a politician so might do (extreme right-wing) things, whereas Trump won't so much.
                          2. His public buffoonery, incoherent ramblings, obvious imbecility, casual sexism, racism and nasty comments about the disabled, southerners, immigrants people from other countries, etc, is useful in multiple ways as:
                          a) it tarnishes the Republican brand so hard that people will still be voting against Republicans for years to come because of him
                          b) it inspires young people and women to vote and gets them into the practice of voting democratic and voting for women
                          c) it reveals to the American people and to the centrist establishment twats on TV just how abhorrent the Trump base actually is as people and how far the country still needs to progress
                          d) it inspires the rest of the West to take a more pro-active approach in world leadership as it reveals the US to be an incompetent actor who can't be trusted and who shouldn't be relied on
                          3. America is a backward country that needs major changes to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the Western world, and nothing brings a major shake-up and inspires people get out and change their country like seeing the worst president in their nation's history throwing constant tantrums.

I hope he serves out his full 4-year term. Hopefully then Sanders + Warren romp into the Presidency in 2020 on a blue wave the likes of which the country has never seen before.

Yes it was a typo, I meant "extension".

Although, if we have a religious nut like Pence running the world, he could be so desperate to bring on Armageddon that God may tell him to press the button so we'll all go out in a blaze of "end times" glory.

The smart money is on a not so senior, "senior staffer."
