  • Remembering 9/11

Today its been a good eighteen years since that act of terrorism. Which stands, at least in the Western World, as one of the greatest acts of terrorism ever committed, where nearly 3000 people were unjustly killed by the acts of a small group of terrorists.

Remembering back it was while my two parents were still together. I had a friend over and we were playing a pc game together, ironically it was about flying small toy planes. My mom rushed in and told us both to turn to DR1, which had the Danish National New Channel on it. They spent the rest of the day detailing the events as they were occuring. We saw to our surprise the second plane crash, and then the final collapse of the towers as the heated steel finally weakened too much to carry their load.

The reactions differed. But mostly there were sympathetic reactions. As we were kids there were sometimes, at least among the guys, some uncharitable reactions that I hope you'll forgive young kids for. But all schools in Denmark held a two-minute-long moment of silence in our classrooms.

After that, we experienced changes in the form of new airport security, and our soldiers went to war with the US as we were allies. The merits of those wars would often be debated, as I'm sure it often was in your country. Europe would over the next several years, find and stop several copy-cat terrorist acts, though bomb planters weren't stopped.

My condolences to my friends in the US. Especially if you have personally lost someone to that event.

Thanks Leonhard, I live close to NYC, we had two families in my Church who lost relatives in Tower One...

Some Pentagon co workers we were teamed up with on a Barstow project were in Wedge Two not far from Flight 77's impact into Wedge One. They thought it was an earthquake. They got out ok.

One of my aunts died that day too, of old age and poor health. She was of the Pearl Harbor generation. She was pretty senile so I don't think she knew what was happening that day. I'm sure it would have killed her if her health hadn't.

We have a good friend who was a NYPD First Responder. He got PTSD so bad that he had to retire and move away from New York.

I was working at a Christian television station at the time and happened to be in my office when I got an unexpected call from my wife.

            "Are you watching TV?"
            "No, I'm in my office."
"Go find a TV. A plane just hit the World Trade Center."
"But that's... how could that happen? What kind of damage-"
            "Just go find a TV."

And then she hung up. I wandered over to master control where we were still broadcasting our regular programming, but the MC operator was watching news coverage on a satellite feed. I was stunned by what I saw. About 30-minutes later, our station manager got permission to turn our station over to a full-time news broadcast, and the rest of day, all the employees sat in the lobby, just watching and not saying much. It was a sobering experience.

I already mentioned where I was when I heard and what I did. I spent days after watching things like this on youtube

I have never been able to hear Enya's "Only time" without tearing up. as it was the background music of the first video listened to.

one of the best songs to come out about 9/11

Alan Jackson was right Faith, Hope and love are good things God gave us. The Greatest is Love, I pray that as a Country we would start remembering this. Without love we are nothing.

I watched "102 Minutes" yesterday, I have a number of times now. I shouldn't watch "102 Minutes" - it puts me in a dark place...

I also remember going to see visit my parents about a week after 9/11. and the prayers we said together for the families of the victims, the survivors and our leaders.
