  • That one job interview question...

I never know how to handle the question about what your biggest weakness is. I know you're supposed to try to spin it into a positive so far but I don't think I've been very good at that. I know some of you here have experience hiring people. Any advice?

"My biggest weakness is not knowing how to answer dubious questions. I always make sure I get clarification and understand what exactly the person is trying to find out. Now, could you clarify that question and tell me what you are after so I can better help you?

Serious answer: write out your response and memorize it. Try to immediately redirect the conversation to your strengths. You are under no obligation to give them reasons not to hire you.

This site offers several ways to deal with it. I've used the idea of making what is really a good thing (a strength) sound like a weakness.

I'm always still in trouble again

No matter what it is, always follow up with "and this is how I deal with it" or "this is how I manage it"..... we ALL have weaknesses, but some of us just don't do anything about it.

I always answer that by saying "Interviewing"

I once was asked "Where do you see yourself 5 years from now".

I pointed to my interviewer's chair and said "sitting right there in that chair".

                He hired me.
