  • Grammar Rules...

I would like to start this grammar thread where we can discuss basic grammar and spelling, ask questions and such.

    OK, a couple of questions.

When you use a exclamation point at the end of a sentence, do you put it right at the end like this! Or do you skip a space like this ! ?

Then is it ever acceptable to use a number in a sentence, like 7 or should they always be spelled out - seven?

How to use an exclamation: I can't wait to go to the pool! All punctuation marks are placed with no spaces; the space comes immediately following the mark.
To the second question: In a formal paper or formal writing; it is never acceptable to use an abbreviation unless you are dating a business letter or using a notation such as citing or marking a page and creating a list or table of contents. In casual writing such as e-mail, personal letters, casual debate, blogging or brief response either way is acceptable and likely best since numbers tend to be universal and the same in nearly every language.

Great thanks! Another question, do you only use "too" for the meaning also? Or are there other times to use two Os? Like going too far?

Yes. Too is used whenever describing anything that is more than......if that is clear. So, going too far, talking too much, doing that thing too are all proper uses.

Got it thanks. Now does any one know why we use el at the end of a word like "label" instead of le like able?

In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? We ship by truck but send cargo by ship. We have noses that run and feet that smell. We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway. How can a house burn up as it burns down, an alarm goes off by going on and you fill in a form by filling it out? And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same (and don't get me started about flammable and inflammable), while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

Finally, did you know that "ough" can be pronounced in eight different ways as can be seen in the following sentence: "A rough-coated dough-faced ploughman through the streets of Scarborough, coughing and hiccoughing thoughtfully."

I'm always still in trouble again

"You're by far the worst poster on TWeb" and "TWeb's biggest liar" --starlight (the guy who says Stalin was a right-winger)
"Overall I would rate the withdrawal from Afghanistan as by far the best thing Biden's done" --Starlight
"Of course, human life begins at fertilization that’s not the argument." --Tassman

And then there's the case of the English-as-a-second-language student who gave it up when he read the headline "Bazaar Pronounced Success".

That is very good to know for the next time I have to write an instruction manual; thank you for that advice.

...And my above reply raises another question that I just thought of: When is it appropriate and inappropriate to use a semicolon to conjoin two sentences? I never could figure that one out.
