  • Because I Said So!

This is annoying. Why do parents use this phrase instead of giving a rational answer? Or if they don't know why, admit to not knowing and asking the other person to do it just because they asked nicely? And why am I annoyed by this? Because I have loved learning from a young age and my insatiable curiosity will not be satisfied with being shut up like that! So, should parents stop doing this? Because it is proportionately more annoying the older the child gets. Even a two year old can understand simplified explanations. Why not take advantage of the learning opportunity?

And don't reply with that phrase!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are saying that since they are the parent and you are the child, that they are the boss. They are saying that you need to obey them without arguing and asking questions.

Oh! Because you want to be annoying? Why didn't you say so, brother? Hmmm... how many brothers and sisters(in Christ!) do I have?

Because when you're trying to get all four kids sorted out and they start interrogating you about every little thing when you ask them to do something you don't have the time to get into a debate with the 9 year old, the 7 year old, the 5 year old and the nearly 4 year old. So the answer becomes "because I said so"

Thank you for giving me a real answer. You could also tell them to go look up the reason if they are old enough. Or just claim that the reason is safety related and they should go look up the answers to their questions in a book! I asked my parents so many questions when I was little, that they eventually just had me read some children's encyclopedias. I then read some medical encyclopedias also. Maybe found out where babies come from a little early...

My mother used that answer all the time including when I was an adult and out on my own and it really infuriated me. Finally when she told me not to do something and she gave that answer to my asking why not (seriously, I really could not think of a single valid reason why I shouldn't do it) I told her flat out that I would accede to her wishes if she would just for once explain why I shouldn't. I also added that if she once again simply responded with "because I say so" I would completely reject it since she obviously had no good reason for telling me not to.

Needless to say she looked me straight in the eye and repeated, "because I say so." I turned around and walked out the door and we didn't speak for nearly a year afterwards.

It's one thing to give that answer to your child when they are living under your roof but it is a whole nuther thing when they are an adult out on their own (I hesitate at using the word "responsible" ).

I should add that today I have no idea what it was we were arguing about at the time.

I'm always still in trouble again

Just explain it now so that I can try to come up with a better solution. It doesn't do anything besides make parents look like they can not handle criticism without relying on age or force.

Sometimes force is all we have the time or patience for.

                              Wow. A real answer.
One that I can understand at that.
