We made way too many messes and were mean to each other and to the "pets". Why did we do this? Why were some Christians in the past terrible stewards of God's creation? I think the environmentalists might go a little far, but they do have a point in that we should take care of our resources in a responsible manner. And not be needlessly mean to other people and animals.

I've been an environmentalist all my life. When you depend on the earth for your livelihood, and you know you only got one, you realize you need to take care of what you got.
But I was taught from when I was little "always take care of your equipment". That includes your resources.
I'm not a tree hugger, but I am a steward. The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

To answer your question about Christians: In high school, my youth group leader said something to the effect of taking care of the environment didn't matter because Jesus would come back before it got too bad. Chiliastic viewpoints are probably one big reason."I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

I believe we need to be good stewards, but I also believe that this old earth will pass away regardless of what we do, and there will be a new heaven and new earth.
Securely anchored to the Rock amid every storm of trial, testing or tribulation.

Assuming that God will take care of any problems with Jesus's timely return sounds to me like putting God to the test. Yeah, God won't let humanity go extinct before Jesus returns, but that doesn't mean we won't have to deal with the consequences of our actions."I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. How is it putting God to the test? He's said He will make a new heaven and earth and the old will be done away with.
It's just reading His word and believing what He says.
