  • Blue Waves and Red Waves

Trump has been tweeting, periodically, about the coming "red wave" in November. Personally, I think the man is in denial. I've been watching the 12th Congressional district in Ohio. This is one of the stronger Republican districts. It has a Cook Partisan Voter Index of R+7. But we have seen a shift to the left of 10-20 points in special elections since Trump's election, and this district is yet another example of the leftward swing we are seeing in the country. This is not a district that should be in dispute. It should be solidly Republican. Even if the Dems ultimately lose it, the fact that it is in question at all should be a matter of concern for the right. Dems need 23 districts. There are 52 districts that are less "right" then the Ohio 12th district, and are up for re-election in November, only 3 months away. Dems need to take fewer than half of them.

I think there is a significant chance Dems will retake the house in November. Personally, I will be happy to see at least a beginning to the return of balance. My big fear is that the swing will be too dramatic, and both Congress and the Executive branch will return to Democratic control in 2020. Personally, now that it is clear that SCOTUS has swung to the right, I hope at least one part of government stays a bit more to the right. If I could call it, I would want the Senate and Executive branch to go left, and the House to go right. That would provide a bit balance.

It is interesting that many who had been predicting a blue wave a couple months ago are no longer talking about it. That isn't to say that it won't happen but rather that few seem confident about it any more.

I'm always still in trouble again

I don't know what will happen in November. but I do think that the radical left (antifa, etc) are putting a bad taste in the mouth of mainstream democrats, and having some of their own senators like Maxine Waters actually support and promote violence isn't helping. But then a lot of Republicans are ticked off at their own congressmen for failing to do their jobs (Healthcare, etc) and refusing to work with Trump to get anything done.

I think that in this election anyone who is running AGAINST the incumbent might actually have a good chance of winning. Congress needs fresh blood. Out with the old!

I consider that a good thing. Over-confidence is partially to blame for the Trump presidency. It's good to see it's not being taken for granted this time.

I am not an "out with the old" fan. It seems to me to be as useful as "government should be small (or big)" or "we need fewer regulations." It's akin to the infamous line in "Amadeus" when Salieri suggests the music has "too many notes."

We have "old" and "new" politicians that are awesome contributors, and we have "old" and "new" politicians that are narrow-minded obstructionists. Government should be as big as it needs to be to get the job done, and no bigger (or smaller). We need the number of regulations necessary to get the job done - not more or less. That reality is why I think Trump's "2 out for every one in" is a pointless, poorly structured exercise. It's bad management.

Maxine never said any such thing. She said so - it's all Trump!

I think both parties are experiencing a parallel evolution. The left is being pulled further left, and the right is being pulled further right. Both parties are leaving moderates behind, which is resulting in a growing body of "independents." Sooner or later, it would seem to me that a new centrist party is likely to emerge from all of that.

                Now THAT would be interesting.

It is interesting to note that every single candidate that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (the socialist who won the upset victory in the New York primary) had endorsed has lost and at least in a few cases been trounced.

But she has such a beautiful smile and I hear that her breath is always minty fresh.

That is definitely one way to look at it but considering the virulent hatred for Trump on the left if they were still seeing indications of a blue wave they could not contain themselves and would be joyfully trumpeting it far and wide. The fact that they aren't, IMHBAO, is telling.

Of course, it is still a long way until November.
