DC Episcopal Diocese Scraps 'Gendered Language' for God, Opens Activities Based on Gender ID

The Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., formally resolved Saturday to eliminate all gendered references to God, and open their gender-specific activities and public facilities based on gender identity.

The Washington-based Institute on Religion and Democracy reported on its blog Monday that the Diocese of Washington for the Episcopal Church passed three resolutions over the weekend at a gathering at Washington National Cathedral. Delegates to the 123rd Diocesan Convention moved within one hour to adopt proposals titled "On Becoming a Sanctuary Diocese: Offering Sacred Welcome to Immigrants," "On Inclusion of Transgender People," and "On the Gendered Language for God."

The resolution about language for God emphasized replacing gendered references to God with gender neutral language and pronouns wherever possible.

Yep, as Seer put it, there's a reason why the Anglican Communion is in terminal decline.

God obviously doesn't have a sex, but there's no reason to deny thousands of years of tradition for no real reason.

Is this an example of refusing to call a person by the gender pronoun by which they've identified themselves? Sounds pretty hate speech-y to me.

Actually he does. Jesus is God, and is male.

God mainly refers to himself as Father. denoting the "He" Although his actual name refers to I am. However because it tends to be disrespectful to use the term we often reference God in the "He" Format. Namely the Father God. It is innapriopriate IMO to deny that God has male and female aspects in fact there are scriptures that very specifically reference that he has a motherly type side but for the most part He is referenced as He. and Its wrong to try and change that.

God transcends the concept of sex. God cannot be be put into any category. He isn't a type of something.

That being said, we have many reasons, aesthetic, psychological, symbolical and theological for using male terms for God. There is the authority, the otherness from the world and the people who is his bride. People who tend to describe God in female terms, also tend to adopt a pantheistic approach to God where the world itself becomes part of God. There are also deep theological reasons, such as the inherent subordinate relation of the other two Godheads to the Father and their emanation from Him.

Its the only appropriate way to describe God if we have to use pronouns.

Besides, from the Bible we know its the pronouns He prefers.

Yep. He specifically tells us to call him "Father" and "Son" and he incarnated as a male.

But since the Son took on a physical male body and still retains it as part of his nature, God the Son indeed has a sex.

So we're supposed to just ignore the 150 to 160 times that Jesus refers to God as "father"? Including using the word "abba" which can be translated as "papa" or "daddy" a couple times?

I'm always still in trouble again

Quoting the Bible is not the same as quoting God. To make that mistake is book worship, a type of forbidden idolatry.
