that would be basically eating Carp. mud fish. Tastes horrible. Catfish is delicious if you fry them the right way.

Nothing like complaining about mudfish while defending mudfish.

It's dug in with a liner, and fairly small, maybe 3' by 10' and three or four feet deep, but that's enough to handle just under a dozen, I think, all of them about three years old now, and about a foot long. He's already expanded the pool once, and he's getting ready to expand it again.

It's covered with canvas over a trellis to protect the liner from south Florida sun, both of which he scavenged from behind a nearby fabric store, the point being this can all be done very much on the cheap.

There's one electric pump that filters directly back into the pool for circulation with a split running through a fountain.

The bottom of the pool is lined with gravel and a fish bridge. He's got plants growing above and on the sides of the pool, and some led strips for decorative lighting.

          It looks pretty good.

Go ahead and try it for yourself. It's friendly to improvisation, and even if it all goes sideways is easy enough to set up and try again.
          Thanks for the info, Jesse.

Speaking of fish fries, we need to try that some time. Lots, and LOTS of yellow perch at the lake. Hoping the weather forecast stays good, I would like to go fishing this weekend.

Koi actually go dormant in the winter. The little bit of reading I've done indicates that you want to keep the water circulating a little to keep it from freezing over. I'm not sure what temperatures they can handle, but it very rarely freezes here.
The marine says if you dig it in a few feet, it won't freeze, and they'll hang out at the bottom, which means you'll need to aerate. He got his pond liner at Home Depot; he likes the Beckett brand. The gravel is actually round river stone. They need daily feeding, so if you've got vacation plans, that needs to be taken into account.

The fish themselves can live for decades.

Have any of you owned koi? Know any tips/tricks I should know for their care, particularly as regards designing the habitat? I will be talking to people here locally and doing other research, but I figured I'd get firsthand knowledge if anyone had some.
I had a koi pond, and was quite proud of it. Then the local birds of prey decided I had created a buffet for their own personal enjoyment, and my koi began rapidly disappearing.

By the way, for this, we set up one of those motion-activated sprinklers, and when the bird would swoop down, the water would spray and scare them away. Eventually, though, they just figured I had built them a fancy bird bath so they could wash up before they feasted.

Seriously, this is a factor to consider - birds of prey stealing your koi.

Sounds like what happened to a friend who set up several bird feeders where he lived which happened to be where a few feral cats also were

Don't birds of prey pretty much come straight down? You could build a roof of that stuff they use for chicken coops over it, and plant grapevines at each corner post to make it aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.

There is a gorgeous statue of an eagle swooping towards the koi at our vet's home here in Barstow. Reading this has me wondering if that's their version of a scarecrow.

The hawks and falcons around here don't come straight down.

I don't know about other birds of prey, but these came swooping in on a "glide path" kind of attack.

Yeah, if I ever decided to koi farm () again, I'll look at options.

I don't think eagles do either. I wish there was a way to protect the fish nearby from that big guy.

Admittedly I have virtually no experience with eagles while they're hunting but I've seen a good number of hawks and falcons come swooping in and grab a mouse, squirrel [*shudder*] and even a rabbit.

Many years back while out hunting we spotted a large nest with a hawk circling high above it. My friend Greg and I figured we'd sneak in for a better look and before we knew it the hawk disappeared. Very soon after it swooped in from behind us about 20' over our heads. Felt really silly being so out-smarted by a bird and thinking that we could approach it without it seeing us.

I'm always still in trouble again
