      Atonement

Went to see it this weekend. Amazing. Watch it whenever it turns up in cinemas near you.

"To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,

      Re: Atonement

      What is it about?
"Years ago, I mean decades ago, I read a quote about politicians performing quid pro quo favors for campaign cash, and whether or not we could prove it. The guy who was quoted opined that it was difficult to determine. He noted that in many cases, the payoff might not take the form of votes on legislative action -- those might be detectable, and so are avoided -- but could take subtler forms, like the question that is never asked at a hearing.

The media's doing a terrific job of not asking questions it doesn't want to know the answer to. It doesn't ask these questions in bulk, and the great volume of questions it doesn't ask makes it cheap to not ask questions.

And it passes these savings on to you, the customer." Ace

      Re: Atonement

Basically it's about the relationship between two people, Cecilia (Keira Knightley - surprsingly not crap) and Robbie (James McAvoy) before and during the second world war and the impact that Cecilia's younger sister has on their lives. It's based on the book by Ian McEwan which is (apparently) one of the classics of modern fiction (was in Time magazines top 100 novels of all time).

The description I've given is rather lame as I don't want to reveal too much. Needless to say, it's stunning and contains one of the most amazing sequences I've seen in years; a five minute shot, weaving through the chaos and horror of the evacuation of Dunkirk.

      Re: Atonement

Just checked and according to IMDB, it has a "limited" release on the 7th of December. I reckon it'll be a pretty strong Oscar contender, so make sure you grab any chance you can to see it.
