      Scotland Rules ITT

      Take that, France!

For any uncultured Americans, Scotland beat France 1-0 in Football last night. That's twice in a row. We are the top of our qualifying group for Euro 2008 with three games left. Our group is the Group of Death, featuring World Champions Italy, runners up France and (for good measure) quarter finalists Ukraine. For reference, we didn't even qualify for the last World Cup.

Yes, we'll still fluff it in the last few games and fail to qualify, but let's just enjoy the moment.

Also, congrats to England and Wales, commiserations to the Irelands.
To rebel against a powerful political, economic, religious, or social establishment is very dangerous and very few people do it, except, perhaps, as part of a mob. To rebel against the "scientific" establishment, however, is the easiest thing in the world, and anyone can do it and feel enormously brave, without risking as much as a hangnail. Thus, the vast majority, who believe in astrology and think that the planets have nothing better to do than form a code that will tell them whether tomorrow is a good day to close a business deal or not, become all the more excited and enthusiastic about the bilge when a group of astronomers denounces it.

Stunning performance by the Scots. They've still got a tricky few games but have given themselves a great chance.

Almost as stunning was the fact that England are actually capable of playing vaguely well.

And lo, a group of warrior heroes went forth and smote the enemy, and among that enemy there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth, while those of the blessed nation rejoiced.

      Re: Scotland Rules ITT

Too bad the Scots are still Britain's version of rednecks.
"Years ago, I mean decades ago, I read a quote about politicians performing quid pro quo favors for campaign cash, and whether or not we could prove it. The guy who was quoted opined that it was difficult to determine. He noted that in many cases, the payoff might not take the form of votes on legislative action -- those might be detectable, and so are avoided -- but could take subtler forms, like the question that is never asked at a hearing.

The media's doing a terrific job of not asking questions it doesn't want to know the answer to. It doesn't ask these questions in bulk, and the great volume of questions it doesn't ask makes it cheap to not ask questions.

And it passes these savings on to you, the customer." Ace

Silly Darft doesn't realise. We don't get any sunshine here, so how could we have red-necks?

The Scottish theologian, William Connelly once described us as a nation of "blue legs", a phenomenon most noticeable on the beach at Saltcoats.
