εἰ περιτομὴν λαμβάνει ἄνθρωπος ἐν σαββάτῳ ἵνα μὴ λυθῇ ὁ νόμος Μωϋσέως, ἐμοὶ χολᾶτε ὅτι ὅλον ἄνθρωπον ὑγιῆ ἐποίησα ἐν σαββάτῳ;

Transliteration:

ei peritomēn lambanei anthrōpos en sabbatō̧ hina mē lythȩ̄ ho nomos Mōuseōs, emoi cholate hoti holon anthrōpon hygiē epoiēsa en sabbatō̧?

Translation (NRSV)

If a man receives circumcision on the sabbath in order that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I healed a man’s whole body on the sabbath?

Analysis (Zerwick):

εἰ : if therefore, "real" condition.
λυθῇ : aorist passive subjunctive of λύω loose, break a law.
χολᾶτε : 2 m.p. of χολάω : you are angry.
ὅλος : whole, entire.
ὑγιής : healthy, well.

μὴ κρίνετε κατ᾿ ὄψιν, ἀλλὰ τὴν δικαίαν κρίσιν κρίνετε.

Transliteration:

mē krinete katʼ opsin, alla tēn dikaian krisin krinete.

Translation (NJB)

Do not keep judging according to appearances; let your judgement be according to what is right.

Analysis (Zerwick):

μὴ κρίνετε : imperative : do not keep judging [BG: Especially in prohibitions it commonly happens that μή with the present imperative is used to forbid the continuation of an act...¶246].
ὄψις : face ; κατ᾿ὄψιν from appearance, by externals (cf. English "on the face of it").
κρίσις : judgment.

Ἔλεγον οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν Ἱεροσολυμιτῶν· οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι;

Transliteration:

Elegon oun tines ek tōn Hierosolymitōn; ouch houtos estin hon zētousin apokteinai?

Translation (TEV)

Some of the people of Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this the man the authorities are trying to kill?"

καὶ ἴδε παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσιν. μήποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστός;

Transliteration:

kai ide parrēsia̧ lalei kai ouden autō̧ legousin. mēpote alēthōs egnōsan hoi archontes hoti houtos estin ho christos?

Translation (TEV)

Look! He is talking in public, and they say nothing against him! Can it be that they really know that he is the Messiah?

ἴδε : aorist imperative of ὁράω : here he is.
παρρησίᾳ : publicly, openly or freely and confidently.
μήποτε; : a tentative interrogative, perhaps? can it be that?.
ἀληθῶς : adverb : indeed, really.
ἔγνωσαν : aorist of γινώσκω : have come to the conclusion, aorist effective [BC: The effective aorist. Just as the aorist of verbs indicating states may express the inception of the state, so the aorist of verbs indicating action directed to some end may express the actual attainment of that end. ¶252].

ἀλλὰ τοῦτον οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν· ὁ δὲ χριστὸς ὅταν ἔρχηται οὐδεὶς γινώσκει πόθεν ἐστίν.

Transliteration:

alla touton oidamen pothen estin; ho de christos hotan erchētai oudeis ginōskei pothen estin.

Translation (NRSV)

Yet we know where this man is from; but when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”

ἔρχηται : subjunctive of ἔρχομαι : (when [ὅταν]) he comes.
γινώσκει : present indicative of γινώσκω : (no one [οὐδείς]) can know.

Then Jesus cried out as he was teaching in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I am from. I have not come on my own. But the one who sent me is true, and you do not know him.

Then they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.

Ek tou ochlou de polloi episteusan eis auton kai elegon; ho christos hotan elthȩ̄ mē pleiona sēmeia poiēsei hōn houtos epoiēsen?

Among the people many believed in him. ‘When the Messiah comes,’ they said, ‘is it likely that he will perform more signs than this man?’

ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι τοῦ ὄχλου γογγύζοντος περὶ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα, καὶ ἀπέστειλαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὑπηρέτας ἵνα πιάσωσιν αὐτόν.

Transliteration:

ēkousan hoi Pharisaioi tou ochlou goggyzontos peri autou tauta, kai apesteilan hoi archiereis kai hoi Pharisaioi hypēretas hina piasōsin auton.

The Pharisees overheard these mutterings about him among the people, so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple police to arrest him.

μὴ εἰς τὴν διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας;

Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

Analysis (Zerwick):

μή : marker of negation in interrogative clauses with an element of doubt.
διασπορά : dispersion ; εἰς τὴν διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων to those dispersed among the gentiles.
Ἕλλην : a Greek, i.e. a Greek-speaking gentile, distinguished on the one hand from Ἑλληνιστής, an expatriate Jew who could only speak Greek, and on the other from βάρβαρος, a non-Jew who knew no Greek.
διδάσκειν : infinitive of διδάσκω : to teach.
