      I Hate Vista!

I don't know what the deal is but nothing downloads correctly. Took two tries with Firefox - which is the only successful download to date!

I want AVG, not Norton, on my laptop. Presently, it won't let me uninstall the current download because the file's not there. But it will let me try and open it from the icon - it just promptly tells me to uninstall it because the files are corrupted!

Oh, and I uninstalled Serif because it would not respond after being unlocked - tried twice. Now the icon is sitting there looking at me although the program really is gone (Serif I uploaded from disc but requires Internet registration).

I hate Vista, too. I have to use it on a couple computers at work, and it doesn't download programs correctly OR save files correctly! I know it's Vista and not me because I copied everything to a shared file and entered the data manually on a regular computer with Win XP on it and it saved AND installed perfectly.... *grrrrr's along with you*

You're scaring me. I was really kinda hoping some computer geek would come poo-poo me and then tell me how to fix it...

I still can't get the old copy of AVG off!!!

I will not be a happy camper if I have to buy AVG just to use it.

That wouldn't be a problem caused by Vista. You'd have the same problem on XP.

      Re: I Hate Vista!

It's funny because I have Vista Ultimate on my home computer and I've NEVER had ANY problems with downloading or installing anything with Vista.

Edited to add: Teal, you and Storico must have something funky going on with your permissions on your download directories. Vista has much stronger (stricter) security on file system objects like directories and files, and also the registry, but the defaults should be fine. I don't know why you're having trouble.

I would normally avoid anything that looks like it might maybe be system related - but truth is I haven't done anything to the settings, I just haven't messed with it much.

      Re: I Hate Vista!

It can happen on XP (or any other windows - I had this problem with crappy windows 98 setups all the time), it's not as much a windows based issue as it is an issue with a messed up AVG. What you might want to try to do is to download AVG and reinstall it. Then try uninstalling it if you need to.

I've done that - three times.

Only now I can't uninstall it!

      Anyone ever use Avast?

      Re: I Hate Vista!

I used to use Avast, and from what I can recall, it was good. And Teal, no fear, I'm sure a total computer geek will come along and tell us we're being silly and that there's a very easy fix. (It might happen in our dreams, but it'll happen. ) You can definitely play with yours. I can't play with anything at work. What scares me is that I told a tech-geek friend of mine in our operations support department about the issue and then I showed him, and his response was "huh. Isn't that funny? hee hee..." and he sauntered off to use his nice, normal Windows XP station. So he either had NO clue or it was such an easy fix that he decided to mock me... either way.....

      Re: I Hate Vista!

      Hey teal, try this:

Delete the program's directory (folder), and then try reinstalling it. If that doesn't work, I know of a way that will fix the problem but it involves the registry

      Re: I Hate Vista!

Teal, have you tried backing up to a previous System Restore point? I've never used System Restore points before, but possibly if you restore a Restore point just prior to when you first installed AVG, and also delete the program's folder (like Neo said), you should be back to where you can reinstall and then uninstall AVG again.

Restoring the restore point from just prior to your original AVG installation should restore your registry to where it was without any AVG entries, so that would be perfect. Of course you would also be safer if you deleted the program's folder too.

Then, when you reinstall AVG and then uninstall it, the uninstallation will/should clear out any remaining stray files in your filesystem, and you should then be clean from AVG. That should allow you to reinstall AVG successfully.

Would you guys mind explaining that in English?

      1) How do I remove the file folder?

      2) The only System Restore I ever used went all the way back - I really don't want to do that. How would you stop it at a certain point?

      Re: I Hate Vista!

Like I said, I've never used System Restore myself. So I am currently researching the issue for you. I HAVE found out that System Restore normally creates restore points every 24 hours, so you SHOULD have a restore point from just prior to the date you originally installed AVG. Restore points are also created just before new Windows updates are installed from the Windows Update site, so if you've updated Windows shortly before you originally installed AVG, you should have a restore point from then also.

One question, for my own information in my investigation, and for further help to you: when (what date) did you first originally install AVG?

I'm going to continue investigating this for you.

      Re: I Hate Vista!

That's part of the problem - it was one of the first things I tried to install. I don't want to lose all the training I've done on Dragon - which was the very first thing I installed (from disc). I got the computer August 3 but I don't think I messed with it the first time until the third week of August. I didn't get it online until September I know (and then only cause I had to to register Dragon. I hate that. ). I don't plan on having it online much but it has to have protection for when I do - and I really truly hate Norton.

Wow, I don't know what to tell you then. If you check at the Dragon web site or elsewhere on the web, you may find a way to preserve your Dragon training before uninstalling Dragon. I kinda don't believe that the Dragon training would be something that would be stored in the registry anyway. It's probably stored in some file in the Dragon folder -- you might be able to find out which file it is stored in by once again checking the Dragon web site or the web. If you find out the file, you could back it up and restore it when you reinstall Dragon after fixing your AVG installation.

If you do find out how to preserve your Dragon training stuff, then you would also lose any stuff you installed after your most recent Restore point prior to installing AVG, when you restored the system to that Restore point to fix your problem. This seems like it might not be so objectionable to you. The real problem is, with your difficulties downloading and installing stuff from the web, and your problems uninstalling AVG, your AVG installation (and thus your antivirus protection) is probably not working. You REALLY need to get this fixed, so you can get antivirus (and firewall I assume) protection again.
