"Yes, I'm quite concerned about health care issues surrounding leaked radiation from Japan. Now, please pass me my super sized, bacon double cheeseburger, combo meal..."
When I was young I admired clever people. Now that I'm older I admire kind people.~Rabbi Abraham Heschel
My most recent faith struggle is not one of intellect. I don't really do that anymore. Sooner or later you just figure out there are some guys who don't believe in God and they can prove He doesn't exist, and some other guys who can prove He does exist, and the argument stopped being about God a long time ago and now it's about who is smarter, and honestly, I don't care. ~ Don Miller Blue Like Jazz

Re: Dieting - Weight loss tips!?!?
just eat all natural foods, eat atleast a pound of salad a day and a pound of vegatibles, get creative and try new ones. eat lots of fruit, get creative there as well, try new ones, keep it entertaining. when you eat meat, it has to swim, fly or run, or dont eat it. chicken, fish, etc, and only eat a small portion.
low fat, low sodium, high fiber and you will reach your normal weight, hardly get sick and feel awesome.
for ice cream, do this: freeze a abanna, then put it in a blender with vanilla soy milk and that will make it like frozen yogurt.
here is example of a daily menu:
breakfast: first fruit, (any and as much as you want) then oatmeal 10 mins after.
snack: salad, or ounce of nuts (non salted) or both. more fruit.
lunch: salad, a type of legume/beans, with whoel wheat tortilla, a vegatable
snack: more fruit, healthy desert like sugar free ice pops
dinner: salad (toss in a avacado), turkey stuff bell pepper, steamed vegatables
desert: strawberry shortcake, get the little shortcake cup, fill it with strawberries and put on non fat whip cream.
eat liek that everyday and you good to go. there are lots of all natural recipes you can use. the idea is to increase fruits and vegatibles, and nuts, which do have calories but high nutritious calories, not empty calories, and your body will use them more wisely.
drink water all day thats a must to, or green tea. no carbonated anything.
its actually fun to eat this way, and you are getting full off the salad and vegtibles so you dont really need anything else you will find. but the snacks are important as well to keep your metabolism running all day.
dont eat any sugar or fruit after 8.The rambler of ramblers!

Or you can just follow the AHA rules for eating and eat according to the ADA, looking for fewer "empty calories." E.G. No Fast Food, No Added Sugar, Low Sodium, High Fiber, Higher Protein, Low Calorie, "Good Fat" and excercise regularly. Why does "dieting" have to be so complicated. Why not just eat less excercise more, change your lifestyle a bit and ENJOY YOUR LIFE!

Possibly because that doesn't work, either. For someone losing a little weight it may make sense - but you try going 'a little' hungry for 24 to 36 months and see how long you actually last. At 1 lb/wk someone who is 100 lbs overweight has to diet for almost 2 years to reach goal weight - and that isn't counting plateaus. You have to find a gym where no one looks at you funny and the staff doesn't ignore you (they exist - but they aren't always the first one you try). Calisthenics are virtually out of the question because they literally hurt - and I don't mean from the exertion. Walking may not be an option depending on where you live and the weather (today would be suicidal for thin people in my state - the obese might as well save a lot of time and call the ambulance before walking outside). Now, it's doable but is AIN'T short term!
I'm not sure why you think that isn't complicated when all but two require reading every label. Worse, it's emotional eating purgatory - 2 to 3 years of never eating anything you prefer and three of those require acquiring a taste for them. Those are a lot of adjustments to make and the chances of sticking to it long term, especially for an emotional eater but even for those who aren't - is slim and none.

What most thin people don't get is that it's a very long haul. Even once new habits are established a setback will reverse them quickly. And then there's the emotional cost of failure which adds up over time. You start a new diet; you do well for a while; you lose weight; you feel great; you plateau or have some other setback; you struggle for a while and finally give up. Lather, rinse, repeat and with each repeat you find the whole prospect that much more hopeless. That's why people end up in surgeon's offices - it's not a 'quick fix' - it's the only hope they have left. Believe me, when that fails you have a very hard time convincing yourself to even think about trying again.
It's complicated, time consuming, difficult, painful and often has little or no reward (1 down, 99 to go is not encouraging, trust me) - dieting is anything but easy for anyone who had to lose more than a few pounds.

Teal,
I know, I was 80 lbs over Being a slave to the scale is tough, its crazy, and its never encouraging. And worst its a challenge when it feels like life gets in the way of everything. Honey I know because I've been there in multiple ways. I've been on all sides every single one, and I still struggle to find what works best, and sometimes it seems like a mountain which I'll never be able to overcome. Eating Right, having a proper relationship with food, is something that I'm learning. And I've been there teal. I'm still working my way through it. And while I've never had to consider surgery, I sympathize when it comes to emotional eating and the complex relationship with food 100 percentPATER aeterne, offero tibi Corpus et Sanguinem, animam et divinitatem dilectissimi Filii Tui, Domini nostri, Iesu Christi, in propitiatione pro peccatis nostris et totius mundi. Re: Dieting - Weight loss tips!?!?
While reading this thread, I truly think that people who want to lose weight, should go to a qualified professional (nutricionist for instance) who will compose a diet which is not only based on one´s specific nutricional needs but more importantly, focused on correcting one´s "bad" feeding habits. And correcting is not changing, because we all know how fragile and frail we are in changing habits...
I know of nutricionists who compose diets for chocoholics or ice cream fanatics, without "patients" having to permanently skip this food. A friend of mine is simply addicted to french fries and has gone bananas on several occasions by the mere thought that she could not eat it no more.... Just that thought alone, makes her run to the kitchen and bath in french fries...
She has lost more than 25 kilos over a period of three years, with a tailor made diet where, her favourite three food items (french fries, pisang ambon liqueur and spagetti bolognese) were integral part of the diet!
All I want to say, it is not just a matter of healthy food but more accepting one´s naughty, stupid habits and take the losing weight from there.
It seems so much more attractive (and fair??) to enter into losing weight, being able to stay the sinner, than having to become a saint first before being allowed the delights of nice curves...
But the secret as I see it, seems the combination and the well thought balance of the other food you are allowed to eat besides your crazy habits. I think here is where the professional comes in and we should not imagine that we can figure this out by ourselves...
Just an idea
... and my answer to scientists is: God knows what you will discover tomorrow...

I joined http://www.sparkpeople.com and have lost (nearly) 50 pounds. I burn more calories than I take in. I exercise portion control (the nutrition tracker is very useful for that), and I took up walking as my primary way to exercise.

HI steven,
To lose weight do exercise regularly and follow strict diet plan. Cardio exercises are great to burn fat and lose weight.
Jogging quick and easy thing you can do every day to lose weight. Set some time for jogging (prefer early morning) as fresh oxygen inhaled results great amount of energy especially to your joints and improves blood circulation system also.
