That's where people tended to eat. AFAIK, group meals in homes were much more common, and I don't think the concept of restaurants was around.
Enter the Church and wash away your sins. For here there is a hospital and not a court of law. Do not be ashamed to enter the Church; be ashamed when you sin, but not when you repent. St. John Chrysostom

    We'll just have to disagree.

Actually YOU put Trump in the White House. He wouldn't have gotten 1% of the vote if it wasn't for the widespread spiritual and cultural devastation caused by progressive policies. There's no "this country" left with your immigration policies, your "allies" are worthless and even more suicidal than you are and democracy is a sick joke that I hope nobody ever thinks about repeating when the current order collapses. - Darth_Executor striking a conciliatory note in Civics 101

Hmm . . . . How do you reconcile this with the apostolic instruction, "Abstain from all appearance of evil." -- 1 Thessaloinians 5;22?
Or how do you reconcile this with the proverb, "Look not thou upon the wine . . ." -- Proverbs 23;31?
. . . the Gospel of Christ, for it is [the] power of God to salvation to every [one] believing, . . . -- Romans 1:16.

. . . that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: . . . -- 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4.

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: . . . -- 1 John 5:1.

Of course this was back during a time when wine was probably safer to drink than the water

I'm always still in trouble again

I think it would depend on what the place was like. A "bar" can range from a restaurant that serves alcohol to a place you'd likely get mugged in. This range blurs the line a bit. The purpose of the bar can also I'd imagine range from eating with drinks to socializing to entertaining business clients to just entertainment to just drinking to get drunk too. And I do wonder if some of the unease for some (please note I am not implying anyone in this conversation but am merely discussing it in the abstract) might come less from moral qualms and more from the status of the place (compare a dive bar to a cocktail lounge).

And this topic also brings to mind a related question--what about casinos?

Casinos are a good place to get poor quickly.
