By using a more competent translation, as well as noting that the verse is probably linked to the prior one.

Or how do you reconcile this with the proverb, "Look not thou upon the wine . . ." -- Proverbs 23;31?
By understanding context and not being so pedantically literal. The context is a warning against going in search of intoxication.

And I do wonder if some of the unease for some (please note I am not implying anyone in this conversation but am merely discussing it in the abstract) might come less from moral qualms and more from the status of the place (compare a dive bar to a cocktail lounge).

And this topic also brings to mind a related question--what about casinos?
That's true. It depends upon the place. A restaurant with a bar is not like a nightclub.

That reminds me. Some people think that just because they have played blackjack for several rounds and lost, that they are due to get a winning hand.

Yup, or flipping a coin --- heads three times in a row, the next time HAS to be tails!

Just spent part of an afternoon explaining how randomness works -- for the third time -- to a friend going on a cruise next month who has a new "sure-fire" system for the roulette table.

Laughing... but there IS NO TRUTH to the rumor that you can't steer a bowling ball the way you want it to go by leaning a certain way AFTER releasing it toward the pins.

Exactly! Ya gotta gently wave your hand in the direction you want the ball to go.
