  • Shoes!

It used to be that I could pick up a shoe on display and know that it's my size. They would put out the smaller and therefore the cuter sizes (five 1/2 to six 1/2 ... yes, I have small feet, why do you ask?). For the last ten years they have not done this. The sizes are usually like seven to eight. It's hard enough that most my friends have bigger feet and so we couldn't swap shoes as we liked. Now it appears maybe the next generation of women have bigger feet maybe?

Ha. I don't think I've pulled a shoe off display since I was a size 5.5 or so (probably age 12). I recall trying on a shoe that was on display and finding that it was the only one in the store in my size, but upon asking for the other shoe, the salesman approached me with a girl and her mother and said that shoe had already been sold; another girl had been trying on the other shoe! Tragic.

My shoe size is essentially 9.25. 9s tend to be tight on me and 9.5s tend to be big. I'm 6'0", so my shoe size isn't all that big for my height; I've known plenty of women shorter than me with bigger feet.

My irritation with shoes is that they tend to stop making half sizes after 9; all you can get is 9, 10, 11, etc. So, my favorite kind of shoe to wear is a peep toe in size 9. I just bought my first pair of Crocs, not the big doofy round-toe monstrosities, but normal-looking peep toe ballet flats. So comfortable.

Good question. There are a few things going on. One Women are taller and likely have feet a little longer. 2) women are larger and have feet a little wider.
I have feet that are naturally a size 8 medium width. I lost half a size after I lost a lot of weight. But I'm taller than my mother (average height of 5'5 for women) Before I hit my final growth spurt, I was 5'3 and wore a shoe size 7

That was the thing...my friends were about my size (or a bit smaller) and had bigger feet. Two other friends were way shorter and shared my foot size.

Today I went on a bit of a road trip and stopped by a Goodwill during my shopping foray. I wasn't exactly looking for shoes...but there they were, a rather cute pair at 6 1/2. Unfortunately they weren't the style I needed. O vell.

And, depending on the shoe, I fit from 5 1/2 to 6 1/2. Sandal weather are much easier since the fit isn't so tight.
