      Teal,

Know it's too late for this incident but the following will help and is low cost and will also help with the pets.

Pick up, if you don't have one already, a tent and sleeping bag. Pitch it in the living room if the power goes off. Simple but effective way to keep the limited amount of heat in a confined area especially if you have candles or other small source of heat.

Used this in ND when we lost all the power lines and no electricity for 2-5 days depending on where one lived. Not too bad and then drove around the neighborhood during the day to get warm.

I don't think that you can ever "expertly" predict what a tornado will do, but you can learn enough to modify your personal risks. I went on my first tornado hunt with my dad over 45 years ago. I go by what he taught me--always be aware of where you're going to go if one turns your way. What I do is look for a good place to shelter, park nearby, then grab the binoculars and camera.

The closest I've been is within about a football field's distance of a little f nothing capable of disarraying a clothesline and not much else. I've seen an f-5 from a distance in Kansas. It's dumb and dangerous in the same way that hang gliding, skydiving, and a whole lot of other activities are. You know your risk upfront. For some people, like me, the fun of the chase outweighs the risk. If it doesn't, your best bet is to head for the basement.

A football field? That's awfully close. If one has experience, then fine. But I wouldn't trust my hubris enough to go out without any sort of radar or satellite data on hand. I'd love to drive into western Ohio when an event happens, but it just seems way too dangerous.
