They make very good kerosene heaters nowadays that are very safe.
They are inexpensive too, and cheaper than a generator to run, and the fuel is less flammable.
I have used in times of desperation those camping stoves too, they will keep one room from freezing.

Yeah, we have one of those out in the garage. It's seen probably 2 weeks total of use in the last 5 years, but it's a lifesaver when the power goes out for a couple of days. You can heat water on top of some of them too if you're careful--we only have adults in this house so it's not a problem. We made tea and coffee on ours. Between that, the BBQ grill to cook, and freezing empty gallon milk jugs full of ice outside to put in the fridge to keep stuff cold, we did fine every time the power went out. This year's addition--a half dozen of those little 5 light LED stick up lights.
One neat thing to have when the power is out is one of those "space blankets." It's a thin sheet of mylar. The best way to use it is take the bottom sheet off the bed, lay it on, put a blanket over it, then put the top sheet back on. It will keep you much warmer, and last I looked they were only 2 bucks at Walmart in the sporting/camping section.I have been honored as an Enemy of Nee™ and LAu Tzu hasn't!

One more really cold night before the warming trend (although 40F shouldn't technically be a 'warming trend'
) No power failures! :happydance: Actually got too warm last night - electric blankets rule!
Kerosene heaters still worry me - I have cats and the rooms I most need heating have the least open floor space.
Snow is still on the ground - when I took Scooter for his walk last night it was still bright from the reflected moonlight - how do you people stand that stuff?
My eyes started hurting again - from the cold, I guess - but it wasn't so bad. It's cold this morning and I'm about to go back to bed. Dunno if I'll brave going to church - still not feeling my best.
Next year hopefully I'll have moved by the time winter sets in.
Thanks, everyone!

No fireplace isn't a problem, there's nothing a sledge hammer, some aluminum foil and a blow torch can't solve.
"Years ago, I mean decades ago, I read a quote about politicians performing quid pro quo favors for campaign cash, and whether or not we could prove it. The guy who was quoted opined that it was difficult to determine. He noted that in many cases, the payoff might not take the form of votes on legislative action -- those might be detectable, and so are avoided -- but could take subtler forms, like the question that is never asked at a hearing.
The media's doing a terrific job of not asking questions it doesn't want to know the answer to. It doesn't ask these questions in bulk, and the great volume of questions it doesn't ask makes it cheap to not ask questions.
And it passes these savings on to you, the customer." Ace

Or just use a screw driver to open the fireplaces... of course, they will either collapse or burn down the house but who's counting?

So here's a question, what sort of equipment does one need for only three inches of snow? That's a serious question. All the places I've lived don't really bother doing anything special for three inches. Heck, the street I lived on in Michigan didn't get plowed until at least 6 or 8 inches were down.

My most recent faith struggle is not one of intellect. I don't really do that anymore. Sooner or later you just figure out there are some guys who don't believe in God and they can prove He doesn't exist, and some other guys who can prove He does exist, and the argument stopped being about God a long time ago and now it's about who is smarter, and honestly, I don't care. ~ Don Miller Blue Like Jazz

They produce carbon monoxide, as do gas stoves, water heaters, and propane heaters. If you use a kerosene stove or a propane heater in your house for emergency heating, you should leave a window cracked. We crack one about 1/2 inch when we have to use it. You do have some heat loss.
If you keep the window cracked, you lose some heat, but your house is still warm enough to tolerate for a day or two 'till the power comes back on. Same with the propane. Same with turning on the gas kitchen range to keep the house warm. It's obviously not the way you would want to heat your house long term, but it's safe enough to get you by short term in an emergency.I have been honored as an Enemy of Nee™ and LAu Tzu hasn't!

Two words: snow tires. You're used to snow and even prepped for it - we're not. No one owns snow tires or snow shovels or anything. They don't know how to drive on it - and the predictable fender benders result. Usually it melts within a day or so - when it doesn't many roads, especially those that aren't paved, become impassable. Snow + clay = spinning wheels.
The high humidity around bridges makes them ice over - ditto. And there is no salt - that takes days to get if at all. Sand may or may not be enough for bridges - if not, it's closed.

Three inches can shut down the whole state - LJ's right, we have no equipment to deal with this stuff. It's the possibility of power failure that worries me.
