Home Economics 101

Welcome to the Home Ec Section. Matters of the family sometimes bring joy and other times bring grief. But it is never trivial: Family matters! Feel free to discuss topics such as the sanctity of marriage; the awesome responsibility of raising children; the struggles of communication problems; the grief of losing a loved one; or anything else that relates to the home and family. However, due to the more personal nature of this section, I ask that you would be especially thoughtful of the readers' feelings. My earnest hope and prayer is that the discussions in this section will help families grow in the love of Christ.

But remember, always play by the rules: here

  • So...

...recent events prompted me to get serious about putting my affairs in order. Went to a lawyer. I have no spouse or kids so I don't have the normal community property or heirs to deal with. Thought it prudent to lay out exactly what I wanted and how the estate is be settled.

So I find I needed to think more carefully who should be my executor and who should have power of attorney etc in case I'm incapable. I want my executor to be someone outside the family because I've heard too many bad stories. The lawyer said I should have someone in the family to decide about life support rather than nonfamily. Ok. That's a challenge I have to figure out considering my family ... ugh.

I'm curious about how you've settled your affairs. Don't have to give details.

Most interesting thread, I have a few advices in regards executors and how my family settled wills the moment one of our own expired.

When following the advice of non-family members for executors, it actually won't hurt to heed the incorporation of a known friend of the family with extensive knowledge of Law, one who is non-kin, but maintains good relations with the family. See to it that the individual is of good standing with the family, and if not convinced, other folk as well. When two of my family members died, it was a 2 known friends of my family that took care of executor duties, and insured the will was carried out properly.

Aye, one for each branch of my extended family (My mother's side, and my father's side). Of course, that's just my kin, one can resort to one if both sides of your family have an individual with good standings with both.
