Home Economics 101

Welcome to the Home Ec Section. Matters of the family sometimes bring joy and other times bring grief. But it is never trivial: Family matters! Feel free to discuss topics such as the sanctity of marriage; the awesome responsibility of raising children; the struggles of communication problems; the grief of losing a loved one; or anything else that relates to the home and family. However, due to the more personal nature of this section, I ask that you would be especially thoughtful of the readers' feelings. My earnest hope and prayer is that the discussions in this section will help families grow in the love of Christ.

Funnily enough I'm waiting for the panel beaters to call me in to repair our car after we got re-ended the other day.
(our excess is waived as the other driver readily admitted fault ... which means I don't have to pay $500 I really can't afford right now)

I've never heard that. But again. I've never dealt much with body work specialists.

ask for an estimate to fix it, and one to just move it off of the door so you can open and close the door for now. And I would get at least three estimates. If you like one guy better but his price is higher, you might be able to talk him down by mentioning the other quotes.

And make sure they agree to charge you no more than the "estimate" - make it a fixed quote. That way they can't come up with "oh, it took longer than we expected" or "It took a few extra parts that we didn't expect" and raise the price afterwards.

Yay, the insurance will cover it all. I had forgot I paid for uninsured property damage as well as the minimum. But I'll have to pony up for the rental car. The plan is for the car to go in on next Tuesday for 5 days. Parts have to be ordered first.

I'm seriously thinking about putting the rental car option back. I have no other car...

It's going to about a thousand to replace fender etc. The headlight works, but it was popped out a bit on the far side so I wouldn't be surprised if it has to be realigned. It's been years since I last looked at that cost, and it wasn't cheap then. We'll see.

One thing I've picked up on was the idea of recording all the damage to the car before turning it in for repairs. I like the idea but I wonder if it's necessary if the repairs were already identified to the company. Just how much more damages can be claimed without someone asking why?

if the repairs were already identified they may ask questions if there are more.

If you are mechanically inclined, you can order the front fender over the internet, and get matching paint at the local auto parts store and replace it yourself. I have done this many times for my cars and those of my friends. Most front body parts are bolted on and relatively easy to remove. It takes of careful efforts to get the paint right. You need to carefully clean the fender and do not handle it with bare hands. The body parts come primed, A clear coat can be applied after. For older cars the match is not exact, because of fading, but for the most part everything is ok.

If the plastic hardware associated with the headlight is damaged it can be also ordered on the internet.

If you are not mechanically inclined without any experience, and not willing to try it, get three estimates and pay the piper.

If the insurance wasn't paying for this I might have considered that, shuny. Thank you.

I'm so glad I had property damage added. I don't know why I forgot that. My car isn't that old and I wanted to keep it in as good a shape as I can.

I WILL admit I've been looking at other cars, especially crossovers. I perhaps love my PT too much, and it *is* over ten years old, so most dealerships apparently don't like trades over the ten year mark. But I do like what's being done with the crossovers. I like cars that stand out and have captains chairs.

Yay! The fender is replaced and the door opens!!!!! The paint job is great and they even applied the clear coat which pleases me. I have had enough of oxidizing paint jobs and don't want that starting with the PT.

It's peeling back on the rear bumper and looks like it's starting on the front. He confirmed it was the clear coat, and indicated it was a cheap job. Says his shop uses the top of the line. I know he's talking like that because I had hinted I MIGHT see him about the preexisting dent in my passenger door that I know I'll have to pay for myself...

I'm debating if I'm better off keeping my PT. Most of what I want are electronic (Nav aids, back up camera, etc) and the car has only a little over 90,000 miles on it. Might be cheaper to just upgrade the electronics.
